It’s a frustrating outcome and a misreading of the audience to expect anything else but I’d argue that it proves that the movie is a perfect satire.
if the point of the satire is to criticize what you’re satirizing but the audience largely doesnt actually see/agree with the criticism, can u really call it good satire?
You seem to be assuming that Verhoeven exclusively made the movie for an american audience, which I very much doubt is the case.
You’re describing literally all satire
It’s excellent satire for a certain audience. Unfortunately, I don’t think it’s possible to satirize fascism in a way that’s effective for an Amerikkkan audience. I think it’s hard to portray fascism in general without Amerikkkans missing the point. See also: the reaction many people had to The Zone of Interest.
Homelander is a great example of this too. It literally could not be more obvious, but people still love him
