Well folks, it’s the beginning of a new era: after nearly three decades of KDE desktop environments running on X11, the future KDE Plasma 6.8 release will be Wayland-exclusive! Support for X11 applications will be fully entrusted to Xwayland, and the Plasma X11 session will no longer be included.

This fucking sucks.
So they’re just going to throw away anyone who needs custom screen resolutions? Window shading/rollup-into-the-titlebar (unless they’ve fixed that)? Turning off a PS4 controller’s trackpad with xinput? Setting HDMI full/limited color range? Whole-display scaling (not widget toolkit scaling)?
Wayland is not ready, and at this point it’ll never be ready because the attitude for anything even slightly out of the “ordinary desktop with no display or input tweaks needed” is always “oh that’s out of scope, no one cares about you”, and the solution is NOT “welp it sucks to be you then, it’s THE FUTURE get with the program”.

As a guy with a 4K display, I can honestly say Wayland is the only path forward, and has been that way for a while now. X is venerable and deserves it’s respect, but it’s day is now past too… It is time to move on, and focus support looking forwards.
