the European Transport Safety Council (ETSC) has warned that plans to grant a ten-year exemption from updating essential safety regulations for a new class of “Made in Europe” small electric cars will put pedestrians, cyclists, and vehicle occupants at risk.
“These small cars are designed specifically for urban environments, where interactions with pedestrians and cyclists are most frequent. To exempt these vehicles from installing the latest life-saving technology – and fixing known hazards like non-functioning doors – until the mid-2030s is unacceptable. Minimum safety standards must evolve to reflect what is technologically possible, not be frozen in time to cut costs.”

Like non-functioning doors?
Tell me its a disingenuous hit piece, without telling me its a disingenuous hit piece.
I guess they mean non-functioning after some accident, i.e. they cannot be opened, while for regular cars, in the last decades care has been taken to ensure functional doors in the same scenario.
This, emergency responders not being able to open doors of Tesla’s because cool handle.
I know, recently, close to my place, three people, including two children, were burned alive after a Tesla crashed and instantly started burning. The person who was the first to help, couldn’t open the doors as the handles were retracted and couldn’t be operated.
Not just Tesla but others as well. I think at least Audi has them on some premium models. I wonder though why they are not designed in a way so they release in case of a crash automatically? I.e. make them spring-loaded so that the car has to have a working power system to pull the handle in but as soon as the power drops the handle flies open.
