Depending on how you interpret it, it’s similar to Christian Nationalists’ slogan: “fuck 'em”
It’s basically advice for control-freaks who would never consider leaving their enemies to their own devices and letting them hang them-selves otherwise.
“Your enemies aren’t worth obsessing over and pre-empting” or “look out for them so they can’t blame you when the inevitable happens” is slightly-better advice, but doesn’t fit on a coffee mug.
Basically, in my opinion, its more about peace-of-mind. “Turn the other cheek” doesn’t mean “help make it happen again” either, more like “continue as you were”.
Jesus interpersonal advice and how to interact with society or government get conflated, but when you look at what he said about the later two its more, “keep your head down, avoid interaction entirely, pay your taxes”.
“My people want no part in/of the world” is how I was taught it, but John 17:14 and verses like it vary by translation.
None of this was advise about getting your way or convincing your enemies of anything. It was about survival, avoiding notice, and being a good example of a humble and caring person. An enemy who proclaims their “love” for you while repeatedly slapping you has made clear how well that advice will work in dealing with them in their sphere of influence, and they are openly ignoring everything else that went with it, along with Matthew 6:5
If you must take any of Jesus words to heart but want to make a difference in the bigger world, be private about the Jesus part. Let others be surprised, even shocked and appalled, to ever find you being kind, versus your public persona. You don’t have to lie about the why when asked, but also be honest that this world has forced you to choose “violence” if anyone else is going to get to live that message to the letter.
