Cmon… get cheap electric cars I can import dammit
what’s wrong with paying $76,000 over 20 years to own a car fully of stupid features you don’t want while everyone else has $5,000 cars?
How much to import one from Canada into the US? Kei is Japanese but I bet China makes some similar style electric trucks.
Won’t this hurt Canadas automotive manufacturing sector?
It’s a sacrifice I’m willing to make.gif < Carney
Germany, Czech Republic, Hungary, Mexico are in similar situation. China is a complex beast because the do have significant government involvement.
I like cars, I like driving (I don’t like cars being forced upon me), but the incumbent automakers have really failed to innovate. Tesla bit the market 13 years ago and some increased their focus on v8 and trucks and others just waited to see what happens and now the executives are acting surprised when China comes to eat them alive, while counting their bonuses.
At what point do governments tell the companies that they need to pivot, or unions that they need to reskill?
I’d pay good money for an electric hot hatch. Untill ten, I’ll keep my 20 year old car.
CPO Taycan Cross Turismo. Amazing car, especially after depreciation
How? Canada doesnt have any companies producing consumer vechiles.
There’s a quota on these imports, it’s capped at 49k vehicles which isn’t enough to immediately destroy the local car industry. Beyond 49k I think the 150 percent tariff will still apply. Carney is slow playing this. Probably wanted this limited deal with China done so that it’s a bargaining chip in the upcoming trade negotiations with the US.
Of course China knows all of that so it’s interesting that they’re playing ball.
Denial will also hurt in the long-term. With this annual quota it seems like reasonable compromise.
