I have a pretty alright 2-in-1 Galaxy laptop that’s unfortunately only 60fps cause every other 2-1 with an OLED was waaaay pricier. Even the one step up Pro model of the same line was like 2x more expensive here.
Definitely less smooth when moving the cursor or scrolling. Pretty noticeable difference compared to my PC and phone. Not a huge thing if you don’t plan on playing games and watching a bunch 24hz movies on it, but it’s a thing.
60hz is extremely noticeable on a mobile device since the whole UI is gesture based and everything constantly moves around. On computers since the UI is stationary it matters significantly less although it’s definitely nice to have.
My iPhone 15 Pro goes from 120hz to 60hz when I turn low battery mode on, and yes it’s extremely noticeable to me. Scrolling lemmy or a long web page results in noticeable tearing. It’s so bad that I thought it was like 30hz until I looked it up.
On my MacBooks, yeah I’m on a website and/or in a vm on a terminal session 99.9% of the time. It could be locked to 5hz and I wouldn’t much care.
To answer your question in the post though, from what I’ve noticed while gaming on my pc, I don’t perceive any difference between ~90hz/fps and 160hz/fps (limit of my VRR panel). I definitely do notice issues with frame timings. I’d rather lock my frame rate somewhere like 120fps than to hit 160 with inconsistent timings.
If the option is 60 vs 120 hz, I’m gonna need 120hz. I really like that you can match frame rate or manually lower the mbp’s refresh rate, really saves battery life when I’m doing the aforementioned terminal stuff or watching a movie on a plane or something.

While it’s getting less common, many similar mid-range laptops, especially business/productivity oriented ones, have a 60hz screen. MacBook Pro has it if you want 120hz.
Variable frame rate going as low as 1Hz and adapting to 24fps (most movies) is much more useful. The high frame rate fad is overly pushed by influencers (aka YouTube “reviewers”) because it is something Apple disregarded for a long time and competitors doubled down on it.
There’s no way that you’re saying not having 3:2 pull down is more beneficial than higher refresh rate when using the OS, but I respect the opinion
For sure not that alone, but I think you can get a good bit of energy saving by slowing down refresh rate significantly - while always on display wouldn’t bring much to a laptop probably. High refresh rate by scrolling or using the OS is for me unnoticeable: on my iPhone, external 60Hz Mac display or IPad, could not say which is which (in terms of “scrolling smoothness”, probably what you are referring to).
For sure, as a mobile device, limiting the refresh rate to 60hz could make some sense as battery is the most impoetant thing of all or else we would just use desktops. That being said, MacBook battery life is so good that it makes sense to lose a little for a smoother screen.
That being said, the 120hz on the pro models comes with variable refresh rate which can save more battery than constant 60 anyways, so you’re right about that

Nope it’s pronounced as a word because it’s just a shortening of the word Macintosh. When you write MAC or say M.A.C. it means “Medium Access Code”, which is a totally different thing
side by side, i think the difference between the air and the pro is noticeable. so, for the price apple charges for their air models, I think they should come with better display panels.
My opinion: not that big of a deal since these are productivity computers mostly, but it’s nice to have.
You won’t notice if you don’t play some extreme video games (are there any on mac already 😊) so IMO not even a nice to have.

I don’t buy Apple when I want a good deal in that regard, I would likely go for a different brand if 120hz was a big deal for my enjoyment of the product. That being said, it’s only like $300 more to upgrade to the Pro and you get more power, ports, battery life, and vastly better display technology.
