With the idea to get away from Gillette razors (due to too much waste) I just pulled out my rusty trusty shavette, put in a razor blade and cut myself open like a dork 🩸.
Sitting here with a bloody attitude, I ordered a cheap safety razor, minutes before I found shavent.
Do we have a shaved chad, that can vouch for shavent?
Might be my next move, if the new safety razor is still not safe enough for this unshaved monkey.
Gilette has normal “safety razors” and blades afaik. I have a random gilette safety razor as it was the only brand available in a drugstore nearby
I can vouch for Merkur (Germany), Edwin Jagger (England), Fatip (Italy), and Muhle (Germany) who manufacturer excellent DE safety razors. They’ve been around for a long time and their products are well known and well loved.
DE razor blades are extremely inexpensive and minimize waste.
It’s Mühle or Muehle but never Muhle
EURKey - The European Keyboard Layout to the rescue.
Damn.
German ä ö ü ß can just be substituted with ae oe ue ss tho :)
The specialty with this one is that it has three blades and a moveable head. A safety razor with static head is on its way.
I’ve been using double edge safety razors for a long time since other methods were never comfortable. I also liked to experiment with different hardware and soaps until I found my preference. I would recommend against using a razor with a design that has multiple stacked blades.
The additional blades often cause additional irritation because the first blade removes the shaving cream, so additional blades are scraping the skin without sufficient lubrication. If you are prone to ingrown hairs, these are also likely to make that much worse.
If you want a closer shave, I recommend doing multiple passes (with the grain, then across, then against; skip the against the grain pass in sensitive areas or entirely) and reapply shaving cream between passes.
Lastly, I prefer having a fixed head razor (no pivot) because then I can control the angle. This allows you to adjust to the cutting angle of the blade and to adjust the aggressiveness of the cut in different areas. A pivoting head takes away this control.
If you need recommendations, for gear let me know. I’m happy to share my knowledge.
Maybe we should start a list of brands (like I did for other items)
Germany: Mühle
Is this a vote for: yes, let us make a list?
Don’t know about this brand, but anyone who has never tried should at least give safety razors a shot. Cheap razors, less waste, recyclable metal, better shave. No reason not to. No one needs 5 fucking blades and spend £5 per cartridge.
So they’re selling you an overdesigned product that’s useless unless you buy their bespoke razor blades and not the ubiquitous razor blades that are easy to sharpen, and have worked for the past hundred years?
This is just Juicero but for shaving.
Nope. Standard razor blades.
My friend swears by Leaf and I ordered one but haven’t tried it yet. Shortly after ordering mine they announced the new Leaf 2.
Nice tip! Thank you!
Ohh. Made in the USA 🫠
Hah touche. I don’t blame you. Find a knockoff.
I have and love it.
Do you have a direct comparison to other systems? Like the dual bladed saftey razor?
Unfortunately no. Before I just used disposable razors. This one is very similar but using foam or any other substance that makes the razor glide is very important.
Shavettes with those single edge razors are maybe even harder to use than a straight razor.
Most double edge razors are very safe and easy to use although they can vary a lot from design and brand. Also a lot of razors can have a judge effect in the shave quality but it’s worth trying out because they are a lot cheaper and even the bad ones can be better than the commercial alternatives
Yea,… I tried to use the Shavette since years. It is an on/off onslaught. Have big hopes for the incoming saftey razor.
You can often find cheap deals on local marketplaces, thrift stores, Facebook etc
Good luck!
Actually Wilkinson (British) is reasonable cheap 😅
You might want to consider a Blackbeards razor.
Haven’t used this one since I’m more than happy with their (discontinued) shavette, and the fact that I sport a full beard 😁
Bought one for my father in law and he’s happy with it. If you have any questions Mike from Blackbeards is really responsive and knows his stuff. Costumer service is the complete opposite of what one is usually used to in Germany.
My Shavette is from that brand. For a fixed head safety razor I went with a really cheap Wilkinson… for now it is just an experiment.

Dr. Bronner Shaving Soaps.
Best I’ve ever used. Feels great on the skin, and you can use it with or without a brush.
You remind me of a youtuber (Ripperkon) who is using that stuff for everything :-)
I never heard of him.
Check my posts. I link to Bookshop.org because they are an amazon alternative and youtube for old movies.
Pretty sure this is the first time I’ve posted a link to Bronner.
It’s a really good product.
I don’t shave close, I just use a trimmer. Originally this is because of my sensitive skin, but it also serves as a great way to avoid spending $23 for a 4-pack of replacement blades.
Do you often nick yourself with a disposable razor?
I got a safety razor(not this brand) a few years back as a present and never had a problem with it. I use it to this day.
I guess some context got lost in translation, due to the overloaded term safety razor.
Currently I’m not using disposable one-way razors, but a "system"razor - the “Gillette March 3”. I can use disposable razors in my Shavette, which is an open blade. The next stop is a safety razor where you swap the blade (german word is Rasierhobel). I ordered it today and it still needs to be delivered, but I have high hopes, that it will be enough.
If not, I’ll test the expensive linked trippled blade saftey razor.
Yes. Thank you for the terminology.
I am currently using safety razor with changeable two sided blades. The manufacturer was Merkur or Muhle I think. I can vouch for it, very comfortable and safe. The shave is not the cleanest(sometimes I have to make several passes to remove all hair), but overall very good.
Hope it works for you too.
