My controversial opinion: once you drive drunk once, you should lose your license permanently.
You’re an adult. You should know better. You probably do know better. If you did it this time, then you’ll do it again. More people will be killed by you driving than will be hurt by you taking the bus forevermore. I do not care how inconvenient it is for you, you can restructure your whole life around never driving again so somebody else doesn’t have to restructure their whole life around a crippling disability or loss of a loved one.
These are dangerously selfish people and we shouldn’t feel sorry for them.
At least in my state, driving on a revoked license brings much harsher penalties, including mandatory jail time and higher fines. IMHO those don’t need to be any more strict than they are today. “I fought the law and the law won.”
The notion of you accepting that the lack of a plastic card registered in a database should be enough to stop anyone from operating a vehicle lol, people that dui couldn’t care less about what you feel about licensing anything
You’d be surprised by the number of people that drive anyway, often with no issues at all, people simply doesn’t care what you think about a license or not.

Also, at least in Germany, you are allowed to drive at low blood alcohol. Having a small beer with dinner and driving home is fine. Getting blackout drunk and driving is not.
Here it is 0.16% (potentially permanent loss of license) / 0.11% (criminal) / 0.05 % (traffic infraction) / 0.03 % (if stopped and showing signs of not being able to drive safely, criminal!).

It is a license. You can do horrible things that disqualify you from ever getting that license back. You are not entitled to drive.

Same in the USA, it’s legal up to 0.08% BAC and then it gets very illegal very fast above that.
