I’m working on a bootleg remix (i.e. a remix without permission from the rights holder) right now, which is something that I haven’t really done before. Not trying to monetize it, I don’t have a large following anyway and I haven’t even come up with an artist name I actually like using (I’m not going to call myself DJ Rumschlumpel, but TBH that one would actually be better than the ones I’ve used before).

Anyone knowledgable about where to post it without getting in trouble? Obviously a bootleg remix is by definition illegal, but lots of producers are posting them anyway on various sites like Soundcloud. How do I minimize the risk of getting into trouble? Also I kinda don’t want to post to Soundcloud, it’s enshittyfying.

TBH my best experience with posting my tracks in general was on the Ardour forum, but I currently use Bitwig and AFAIK they don’t really have a standard forum.

For what it’s worth, I live in Germany.

    Bandcamp is full of mashup-style tracks based on samples, though generally with titles that don’t announce them as remixes. (i.e., vaporwave artists like Luxury Elite, many of whose tracks are based around a few bars of an 80s pop song, slowed down and caked in reverb.) You should be able to get away with putting things there unless you’re confessing in your track titles/descriptions.

      Hm. If I was just using some heavily altered samples, I wouldn’t even have asked, but what I’m currently working on is more along the lines of taking the isolated vocals of a relatively recent song as-is and putting it to a harder instrumental.

          I fear that the only thing that reaching out to the artist/label would do is paint a target on my back … if it was a smaller artist, maybe, but it’s a big contemporary artist on a major label and I’m pretty much a beginner.

          This community in particular doesn’t seem like one where you’re supposed to share your stuff, but considering how few posts there are we could change that.

            That’s a valid point. Some larger artists are cool but you can’t assume their labels are too.

            I agree. It’s very low traffic and any original work by our users would be welcome. I’m the only active mod here so know it would be welcome.

            Edit: but taking another look at the rules that were written by those before me, projects you’re working on are welcome.
