    EU countries aren’t usually in the business of actively shielding MENA countries from (formal) scrutinity in international institutions.

      Really? France did support the Saudi led intervention in Yemen for example. The sanctions against Sudan are a joke. You still ususally get somebody to do something decent, which is nice, but it is pretty common that one of the big countries is bought. Not to mention the unwaivering US support for Israel, which usually ends with them kicking down on anybody who speaks out against Israel.
