Capitalism is when no food now?
a lesson that the irish of the 18th century had to learn the hard way.
Literally 1489
Oh no it’s 1929 all over again
Feels fucking insane that i’m the only person at my job who seems worried. Like, we sell food. What do they think is gonna happen when with the budget we’re given we literally can’t afford ingredients to sell?
We’ve already had a few weeks of really sparse produce and running out of shit like fucking cooking oil but i think that was just due to them not ordering enough
They must be expecting bailouts.
All that obesity is about to come in clutch.
Remember when Mao’s ignorant farming policies caused famine and death to millions of Chinese ?
Welcome to tyrant country!
Americans see something American happening Americanly in America: what are we a bunch of ASIANS!!!
My favorite is when capitalism happens in the most capitalist country to ever capitalist, but it is blamed on socialism, communism, Marxism, anarchism, Democrat or whatever other words with completely different definitions that they use interchangeably.
I remember those policies and incentives being corrected and China being free from famine ever since. The US is incapable of such reexamination. The victims of the Dust Bowl remain uncounted and unmourned.
I love how both china and Russia had cyclical famines every few decades for literal centuries and then never again under communism
WHAT ARE WE, A BUNCH OF ASIANS
The graphs in the paper you linked show a big spike in mortality around 1960. The Great Chinese Famine was 1959 to 1961. How does Mao get credit for lower mortality in 1962 onward, but not receive blame for the famine years?
Because you have to look at the overall picture instead of cherry picking. The reality is that China was completely devastated after the war, and rebuilding was not an easy process. There was no blueprint for what to do, and people were doing their best given what they knew. The paper I linked shows that the policies proved to be correct on the whole, and life expectancy increased dramatically as a result.

Yeah, not buying that argument at all. Practically every country was devastated after the war, China’s hardly unique in that regard. Why would it take fifteen full years for China’s postwar woes to culminate in an acute famine? Makes no logical sense, and stinks of excuse-making.

Mao wanted to reform China, and tens of million of deaths was the price he was willing to pay. It’s a lot easier to make great strides when you don’t give a fuck about your own people. I’ll reserve my admiration for leaders who manage the feat without inflicting untold human misery on the their own citizens.

That’s because evidently you’re historically illiterate. China went through a century of humiliation prior to the war, being colonized and devastated by predatory western powers. That was, in fact, a very different situation. Meanwhile, 15 years is not that long of a time to restructure your whole society. It’s pretty clear that you and logical sense don’t really get along.

When you make things up, anything can be true.
Until he came along China had never suffered a single famine.

NATOpedia source. I like how concise most of the other death counts are, except for the final famine under communism where the number is, as always, between 15 million and 100 gorrillian. Like we can accurately count the number of deaths for a famine in the 14th century, but as soon as an enemy of the west is involved the error bars blow up like a red giant.
How many first world Westerners starved to death today?
How many homeless?
Do you even know?
Don’t worry, it’s 41D chess
There is the angle that this is accelerationist behaviour by Western capitalists to collapse certain systems so they can snatch up assets up at pennies on the dollar from bankrupting farms & businesses.
Never attribute to stupidity what can easily be explained by disaster capitalism
