I know this is a stupid question, but what does the governor general do exactly? I was under the impression that the role is mostly symbolic, so I was surprised to find Carney appointing someone this qualified for the role when he could employed her elsewhere in his government
In addition to the official ceremonial duties, they also do a lot of philanthropy, advocacy, and act as a sort of ambassador.
It’s one of those things that’s simultaneously pretty important and not important at all. Their role in Parliament is ceremonial, but they’re still something of a dignitary.
