I know this is a stupid question, but what does the governor general do exactly? I was under the impression that the role is mostly symbolic, so I was surprised to find Carney appointing someone this qualified for the role when he could employed her elsewhere in his government
It’s one of those things that’s simultaneously pretty important and not important at all. Their role in Parliament is ceremonial, but they’re still something of a dignitary.
Cuts ribbons and signs passed laws set in front of her. Very, very rarely resolves parliamentary crises if there’s a minority government that loses a vote of confidence and tries to find a coalition that will form a government, or advises the calling of an election if not.
She is both anglophone and francophone, like King Charles and Carney himself.
