Spend 80 years organizing your geography around the car

Spend 70 years justifying capitalism as superior because of affordable and abundant consumer goods

Spend 30 years organizing your economy around importing those consumer goods specifically from China.

Fuck no, you obviously can’t buy a cheaper and better EV from China!

There’s some tech bro nonsense coming out of China’s EV market but a lot of it is genuinely very cool and exciting. Reminds me of when cell phone companies were still figuring out which gimmicks worked and which didn’t. The price points and the trip ranges are easily the most exciting parts for me though.

I wish I lived in the alternate timeline where the USSR was putting out a new Lada EV that still has all physical controls and the only user-facing tech stuff was a head unit with Bluetooth and a small screen for the backup camera. If it made any economic sense, my ideal car would be some low tech 2000s subcompact like a first gen Scion xB or Honda Fit retrofitted with a modern EV powertrain. Well, I guess my ideal car is no car at all, but y’know.

I’m with you. I don’t need my headlights to project graphics onto the road in front of me. I don’t want my side mirrors to be camera feeds. I don’t need a projector screen to unfold in the back seat. I don’t need a dedicated little tablet to replace all the climate controls. I just want to be able to drive in comfort and not pay out the ass for the privilege.

          No, they really do care.

It happened with the Japanese automakers, and it is happening worldwide with Chinese automakers right now.

And it’s every industry. Not just auto.

Nobody buys American cars unless they are doing it out of patriotism. There is no objective reason to buy a Ford over a Toyota.

If the identical product is made in Peru, people will prefer to buy the Chinese product.

If the product is made for cheaper in Peru, people will still prefer to buy the Chinese product.

It really does not take much critical thought to arrive at this conclusion.

Go ahead, stay in your bubble. It benefits me more anyway.

Their styling stands out, also there are things inherent to being from China i find more fascinating, especially not being the primary market to these vehicles, similar to 1980’s JDM vehicles have features inherent for it’s primary markets over our domestic products

So you want a cheap EV, and you don’t really care where it’s from. Additionally, you are curious about their cars.

(There is nothing wrong with being curious about their cars)

On top of that, the Chinese manufacturers seem willing to add more creature comforts or (admittedly) useless features. It’s cheaper and made to a vision outside what my domestic market provides, and way more enticing than any EV i could think of now.

Probably the best part is cutting out dealers because they’ve put the domestic industry in a terrible position overcharging for every available make and model for sale, thinking that the market can hold the high prices they demand because they still think people still have spare cash from covid. Now their overstock inventory hasnt moved for some up to a half a year, and they’re trying to cut prices down because their stock is bought via financing, which I’ve recently learned “punishes” dealers if stock doesnt move after 3 months by shooting up the interest rates, lighting a fire under their ass.

This is a problem of their own making, and having a new competitor helps shake up these markets

Now if Peru entered the automotive market with something it would be interesting for other reasons, I know Peru doesnt have the industry to make EVs and i dont find it fruitful to think in these kinds of hypotheticals. Their needs would produce a different kind of vehicle entirely

Mostly because CATL is the largest battery maker in the world, China has way less expensive EVs than anywhere else. You can get a solid range EV with tons of nice cutting edge features, and it still costs less than just about any competitive offering. This year’s cool new feature is headlights that are digital projectors, so vehicles are mobile drive-in movie theaters now.
