    I didn’t realize that people along the borders and coasts of every country and US state ate pies for breakfast…

    …interesting.

      They consider that “Yankee” means somebody that eats pie for breakfast. What is a completely different thing.

    Weeeell:

    Screenshot of the dictionary entry for the Japanese word yankii which is borrowed from yankee. It means juvenile delinquent first and American only second.

    ヤンキー = yankii

    Ok I’m gonna have to ask the Vermonter part of my family about this. I will say, I don’t think of people from New England as the exclusive Yanks, speaking as someone from NJ. It’s anyone from the north when you’re talking to fellow US citizens and all US citizens when you’re talking to someone from outside the country as far as I’m concerned

    Do people in Washington, Montana and North Dakota think of Canadians as Yankees, it is the concept of ‘north’ weird there?

      Canadians are not yankees. Yankees are from the southeast. The entire east coast of the US is far further south than most people realize.

        I was trying to comprehend why a citizen of Montana would designate ‘a northerner’ a Yankee.

        I was being obtuse and ignoring the point that it was probably self-referential.
