A new IRENA report finds that 24/7 “firm” clean energy is cheaper than coal and gas in many parts of the world. The Iran war may catalyze faster adoption.

And yet my only option for it is to build my own power station in my back garden. How the fuck is that the best option right now? Why can’t my provider make use of economies of scale and buy a container ship full of solar panels.

But it seems to be that the best option is to make my own solar power station… Perhaps I should and just cut myself off from the grid entirely.

Same reason why the cheapest option for a household that already owns a gasoline powered vehicle is to keep using the vehicle they already own.

If it were starting from scratch, solar+battery would be cheaper than new gas. But as it stands now, the gas plant is already built and operational, so a new solar plant would have to compete with “already built, no additional funds necessary for construction.”

Certainly tempting, got other projects in mind to do first to improve efficiency. Already had the gas connection removed a few years ago.

Next up is new windows, probably go for triple glazing but should check how much difference it really makes and how much extra it costs. MVHR is another one to look at for the bathroom.

Unintentionally, most likely, but yeah kinda. As much as I hate having higher prices connected higher fuel cost, I also have schadenfreude for every dickhead with an F150 have to spend $100 every fill up.

it’s six dollars plus here. there’s a guy who’s truck hood is as high as my chest that parks nearby, iirc he’s got a 36g fuel tank lol.

tho, while insanely expensive, the idiots are still drag racing up and down a few blocks over - so it isn’t painful enough… yet.

so effing glad I bought an ev.

Utility scale PV + BESS is. Not Commercial & Industrial (C&I) scale in suburban and urban contexts.

Countries need to be subsidizing small PV + BESS for this reason. Utility scale has fully taken off and is mature at this point.
