At the same time that they’re tightening laws for refugees who actually need a safe place to live. Cool, love that for us.

The law allows people living in other countries who can trace their lineage from Canadian ancestors to qualify for Canadian citizenship even if their Canadian ancestor left Canada several generations back.

Prior to Bill C-3, Canadian citizenship by descent was limited to the first generation born or adopted outside Canada to a Canadian citizen. However, that limitation was struck down by the courts as unconstitutional.

If my wife happens to fall into this category, am I also a citizen by marriage? Just in case this becomes extremely important on th next couple years.

You could apply for permanent residency, then apply for citizenship. Being married too a Canadian Citizen gives you bonus points to qualify for your residency

        The specific link: https://www.canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/services/canadian-citizenship/become-canadian-citizen/eligibility/already-citizen.html#s3

Seems like I could be a resident, tho?

Oh maybe - I just gave it a passing glance and focused on

You’re not automatically a Canadian citizen if you

          marry a Canadian citizen

I wouldn’t be surprised at all if there’s an expedited path to residency.

Generally, spouses can qualify for residence permits immediately, and those can be parlayed into citizenship after some time in the country.
