After reading Upton Sinclair’s The Jungle, Teddy Roosevelt sent government agents to inspect the Chicago slaughterhouses. They conditions they found were worse than the book described and that was after the slaughterhouse owners found out government agents were coming and had their factories cleaned from top to bottom.
Some of the stuff described in the book was just plain nasty so how it could have been worse is beyond me.
