Eastern Germans never seen them as allies. Some friends living in a town with a Russian military base did not seem to happy about them, causing issues and sometimes inconsiderate behavior, yet the east German police would not do anything to upset the Soviet soldiers.
Either they are trying to appeal to Eastern Germans where the Russian used to be the main ally or they are influenced by a Russian lobby.
