IT ALWAYS COMES BACK
The lightning bugs aren’t always coming back. :(
Fewer of them every year. They’re hard to find now. Impossible to find soon.
But, sure, keep on spraying those pesticides, wouldn’t want your grass to turn brown. And keep on sweeping up those leaves, wouldn’t want the fallen leaf litter that lightning bugs depend on for food and shelter to be an unsightly mess on your manicured lawn. And keep on bulldozing forests and meadows to build more housing developments with shitty fucking lawns, because nature only has value under capitalism when it’s destroyed.
I came to say this. When i was a child you could walk in the fields on new moon nights. The fireflies so thick they would light the path. You can only see that in photos and movies now.
Just got a new house with a decent sized back yard with lots of good houses for lighting bugs, and its been surreal to see so many again after so many years. I just go out to my backyard sometimes to watch them all. I’m planning on planting more natives and reducing the amount of grass lawn to hopefully get even more.
Same!! My back yard isn’t huge but we have had an increasing number of fireflies for the past few years.
A lot fewer people in my area are mowing or using pesticides.
its people getting rid of their leaves that is killing them. Lightning bugs lay eggs on the leaves and they have to stay undisturbed until the eggs hatch or you still them. Everyone gets rid of their leaves now.
I leave all my leaves under the bushes and my home always gets fireflies now! It’s great.
yeah also agriculture kills a whole lot of bugs by regularly plowing the soil. insects lay eggs in the soil in autumn. if the soil is perturbed in late autumn or early spring, it kills the eggs.
basically, we’re using the same land area to feed ourselves as insects would otherwise use. that’s what largely kills them.
And it’s more and more deadly every year! Yaihyeee! /s
