I actually agree with Emily’s review, I liked the movie but it was still just mid. I mean, three hours long in ancient Greece and nobody fucks? Come on man.
The writing in any Nolan film is always the weakest part, and if he wasn’t so good at doing gimmicky shit that looks good, nobody would think his movies are good. He’s good at making good looking scenes, but he sucks at telling a story with them, that’s why he’s a mid director at best

ETA: doesn’t mean I don’t like his movies, you just have to know what to expect from a Nolan movie.
And just like Bay, I’d say his movies are typically very entertaining, even if they aren’t fine cinema.
Oh yeah 100% agree. It’s fun shlock to watch, and it’s also true that the writing sucks in both directors’ movies.

He should find a decent or stellar writing partner and just focus on handling the directing…
The movie looks good?
I watched it and it’s a good watch, far less boring or brooding than I expected honestly. It’s just got bad writing, especially considering it’s adapting one of the most influential and studied texts in western literature.
I’ve called him “middle brow Michael Bay” for the longest time. Entertaining movies with decent enough spectacle and composition, but yeah nothing profound lol.
As someone who didn’t watch this movie, is are there any in-lore explanations of why any of the relationships are technically legal and not gross?
I don’t think he should get as much credit for his cinematography as he does, not only because he has a cinematographer/director of photography (The Odyssey shares a director of photography with Nope which similarly gives enormous credit to the cinematography to the director who didn’t fucking do it) who should get at least some of the credit, but because his insistence on shooting for a format and aspect ratio that is essentially lost technology is to my mind borderline antisocial.
