Early 3D arcade game using vector graphics.

Wikipedia,

With its use of three-dimensional vector graphics, the game is considered to be the first true 3D arcade game that has a first-person perspective, the “first big 3D success” in the video game industry, and the first successful first-person shooter video game in particular.

It got ported to every other thing, and most of the screenshots I found are from the ports to raster computers. I think this is a photo of the vector one,

Battlezone

Guessing here but I think the colors came from simple colored filters over the monitor. So the red score area just had a red film over it etc, and the arcade HW couldn’t do color.

I watched somebody play it on youtube, and it seemed like a few notes of 1812 played when the game was over. Heavy on few! The ad copy saying it features the 1812 overture is… a stretch!

Did anything stop someone from getting good enough to play it indefinitely on one quarter? Like some undefeatable game mechanic?

I was pretty good at it, in that none of the enemy tanks could ever get me. The trick was to reverse away from them, turning a bit at a time, until you were lined up for a shot. In the end, I always ran into an object behind me and got stuck just long enough for one of the missiles to get me.

I definitely wasn’t that good at it, but I was just a lil kid. At the time the graphics made a big impression on me though.
