But really, the amount of money saved from owning a cheap, short range ev could just be spent renting a car for a roadtrip. I could see the rental industry evolving to have people swap cars to continue on their journey.

You think you can rent a car with the savings. Until you go to pick up the car and it isn’t there. That has happened more than once to people I know.
