It’s obviously not the most impressive cyberdeck but it’s pretty cool for this to be on raspberry pi’s official blog.
Also, the latest issue of the Raspberry Pi Official Magazine is all about cyberdecks.
The thing that always drives me nuts about these builds is that even with a self-contained thing in a small case, people are stuck using wireless keyboards to connect to the computer located inches away. Why are there no small wired keyboards anymore?
Pi is dead. $300 for just the board is ridiculous. You can build a cheaper and faster cyberdeck by cannibalizing a Chromebook and installing Linux.

And to @nobodysreadingthis@quokk.au , they didn’t get bought – they split up the training and learning non-profit part of the business from the product sales for profit side of the business. Call that what you like but to me, it was OK. I think they’re still doing what they can to serve the need for their super educational SBCs around the world.

I clicked the link and at $279 pi5 isn’t there. I checked separately and those prices aren’t there. Maybe it’s an in store special at your particular Microcenter?
But even at $279, it’s still ridiculous given you still need a hsf, power supply, screen, keyboard, and battery to be equivalent to a cannibalized Chromebook.
Amazon drones have some pretty cool tech if you dismantle them.
No way those things cost $300. They were like $50 tho I haven’t looked at any in a while. Maybe I need to sell my old pi3 and pi4 and make a buck

Talking with no research or anything, but wouldn’t those high prices be mostly because of current RAM prices, instead of any inherent problem with Pi ?
Most of the latest spike, yes, but Pis have been trending overpriced for about half a decade now.
About $400 CAD for the kit.
NUCs work, too, if you want a little more power for your dollar. Although I haven’t checked the prices on those in a bit…

I think that the whole concept of a Cyberdeck is that it needs to be completely designed and built from scratch by the individual using commodity and custom components.
That said, if someone builds one out of a Pi500, a USB brick and a portable monitor, held together with ducttape, and wants to call it a cyberdeck, that is fine.
They may not have the same cachet as someone who fabricates their own case and circuit boards, with an SB compute module, but that is fine.
Pi got bought o think. No longer nonprofit, enshittifying after industry started using them in everything.
