My guess is it was intentional. You’ll notice it’s been posted here. And, it probably got on the local news, too. People talk about it in the diner, etc.
At least in my area, if a store in a strip mall or plaza closes, their business name on the big sign by the road gets flipped upside down so people know it’s closed until they get something to replace it.

I think I’ve heard of billboard companies doing this if people stiff them on the bill.
