Israel ordered its state-run electricity company to halt supply to the Gaza Strip on Saturday after the Palestinian militant group Hamas launched a surprise attack on Israel, the energy minister said.
“I have signed an order instructing (Israel) Electric Company to stop the electricity supply to Gaza,” Energy Minister Israel Katz said in a statement.
At least 150 Israelis have been killed in the attacks launched by the Palestinian movement Hamas.
Israel said the Iran-backed group had declared war as its army confirmed fighting with militants in several Israeli towns and military bases near Gaza and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed to retaliate.
The Israeli government is a disgrace. Shameful corrupt regime needs to be jailed for crimes against humanity.
Be that as it may, no government in the world would leave today’s events unanswered for.
Turns out when you treat a population as subhuman for over 50 years, some of them start doing some inhumane shit…
The solution is basic human decency, but asking the oppressed population to change before the oppressors never works out.
Israel disengaged from Gaza almost twenty years ago now, ending the occupation and effectively giving the Palestinians the chance to have their own state.
Since then, Gaza has attacked Israel, targeting its civilians over, and over, and over, clearly showing that the desire for genocide is no less today amongst the Palestinian leadership than it was in 1948.
I highly doubt that Israel will ever repeat such concessions in the future. Simply put, it was a grave error with a cost that Israel is still paying in blood to this day. This current invasion by Hamas only reinforces the fact that Israel fundamentally cannot trust Palestinian leaders and must keep any autonomy with a very short leash.
Are you just going to ignore the months of articles about how Israeli “settlers” have been kicking Palestinians out of their homes?
You put a group of people in a small space with little resources, and then keep shrinking the space/resources while under constant threats of violence…
And shit like this will happen. Eventually their lives are so shitty that they take insane risks, like starting a war with someone vastly more military strength.
It’s just a scaled up version of a riot.
You can’t treat humans like animals, then act surprised when they act like animals.
There is not a single Israeli settlement in Gaza. Their GDPPC is some 5000USD, which, for comparison, is almost twice that of Haiti. Insane amounts of international funding goes into Gaza every year. In fact, they receive the highest amount of international aid per capita on earth (more than 500USD/Capita!). In addition to that Israel usually provides both electricity and water at discounted rates, meaning almost everyone has access to both.
The Gazan leadership has been given numerous chances and opportunities for peace, yet over and over they chose to slaughter the innocent. The aid money, instead of buying food, funding education and healthcare goes to buying weapons, rockets and indoctrinating the next generation of genocidal terrorist.
This was an act of war, not a riot.
You’re acting as if the Israeli’s gracefully gave Palestinians a home in Gaza. The conditions in Gaza are abysmal purely due to Israel’s actions.
Palestinians were forced into Gaza after the slaughter of over 200 Palestinian towns in 1948. The survivors of those attacks, refugees, were forced into the area we now call Gaza.
Gaza is effectively the world’s largest open air prison. They are fenced in by what Israel so lovingly calls the “iron wall”. Gaza citizens are not allowed to leave. They are prisoners of that strip.
Their trade is severely limited. They face militarized border crossings on both ends with Egypt and Israel.
Israel even built a sea wall to prevent fishing boats from being able to “go too far” and they patrol that sea wall with warships and will sink any boat that gets, what Israel deems as, too close to that sea wall.
That isn’t a life. That isn’t living. The Palestinians in Gaza face unemployment rates of over 50%. They’re completely cut off from the world.
Of course they’re going to fight back. I don’t know what anyone else would expect. You can’t treat people that way and expect that they’ll just lay down and take it.
You’re acting as if the Israeli’s gracefully gave Palestinians a home in Gaza. The conditions in Gaza are abysmal purely due to Israel’s actions.
It’s Hamas. Blame the right culprit who has put at risk the lives of so many Palestinians.
True, but they should target Hamas. Collective punishment is a war crime.
They do target Hamas. Hamas likes to hide terrorist activity in homes, mosques, schools, and hospitals. Which is why Israel develops technology to try to ensure that there are no civilians present when it fires on a base of terrorist activity. And also why Israel uses a variety of technologies to warn any potential civilians who they might have missed that there is a counterattack coming to disable rocket fire. Hamas doesn’t mind the headlines when a few Palestinian civilians inevitably die in one of these counterstrikes. It’s part of the plan.
I’m aware of that. And that’s collateral damage, which is unfortunate but it happens in war, especially with groups like Hamas operating as you said. I’m specifically talking about shutting off all electricity to Gaza indiscriminately – that’s collective punishment.
The Palestinians are just answering the decades of colonialism and genocide they’ve received
nothing in Israel has resembled colonialism since its founding. The British and Ottoman and other colonies were quite awful, but thankfully, those times are over, and the indigenous people of Judea are welcome there once again.
Nothing? If forcibly taking people’s land doesn’t qualify as colonialism I don’t think anything does.
Eye for an eye makes the whole world blind. Pretty sure hamas did these attacks because of what Israel did to them yesterday….
Planned in less than a day, you think?
Metaphorical yesterday, but from the article is says maybe Iran government helped hamas? I don’t know, I just know that what hamas does to Israeli people is nothing compared to what Israel has done to the Palestinian people.
But what’s funny is that Israeli government probably did kill a few Palestinians yesterday…. Which neither of us questioned. Funny not funny
The Jews of today are no better than the Nazis of yesteryear morally speaking
No. If you are against Jews or Jewish people in general or even if you just think ill of them, you’re a fucking bigoted piece of shit.
I was talking about the Israeli government, not Jewish people.
News flash, Israel is a Jewish state
How far up your ass is your head currently located? I mean, do I need to call guiness record company, let me know I think we can get paid for submitting the record. I’ll be your witness.
This type of collective punishment against civilians is a war crime.
I don’t think this is a “punishment.” It seems rather foolish to expect them to supply electricity to the people actively using the electricity to kill their civillians.
“to the people actively using electricity to kill their civilians”
Right. So you’re telling me they have data analysts that can precisely tell which buildings are occupied by hamas and which are occupied by civilians. You know, intel that would be worth a fortune for them considering that’s kinda their enemy and it would be an incredible chance to get rid of them once and for all. Notwithstanding the fact that they’d have to have the ability to individually toggle electricity for every building, which, I have a feeling, does not in fact work that way.
Allow me to clarify.
Their first priority is to stop their citizens from dying.
If they need to cut off electricity to terrorists to do that, they will. If they need to cut off electricity to whole regions of the Gaza strip, or the Gaza strip altogether, to keep their people safe, they will.
More targeted enforcement would be preferred. Sure. But that’s not what I said was happening.
You know, intel that would be worth a fortune for them considering that’s kinda their enemy and it would be an incredible chance to get rid of them once and for all.
Fun fact, Israel is very good at intel. Israel can often find which building are occupied by Hamas.
Fun fact, Hamas enjoys operating from, and firing rockets from, civilian homes, mosques, hospitals, and schools. Here’s a handy list: https://kbin.social/m/Israel/t/368817/A-handy-list-of-sources-describing-where-Hamas-produces-stores
One of Israel’s greatest challenges is finding ways to stop terrorism given this unfortunate reality. They develop technology to try to detect civilian presence in these buildings, and to, in case they miss anybody, warn the civilians and give them time to evacuate.
There is no civilian infrastructure in a concentration camp. There are no civilians in a concentration camp.
Not having that data is exactly the point, if they had that sure they could specifically cut power. But they don’t have that, and Hamas is mixing with civilians, so they’re forced to cut power across the board

Those ideas originate mostly from those within reach of the IDF. They know what to do.
I might be wrong here, but i don’t think Hannah is using Tesla cannons to bomb Israel. How exactly does electricity factor into their plans?
I’m not sure how Hamas makes and fires its current rockets, but I imagine there are at least lightbulbs involved in their process.
expect them to supply electricity to the people actively using the electricity to kill their civillians.
The second half of your comment refutes the first
what? how so? Are you saying you do expect them to help Hamas kill Israeli civilians? Is “not being allowed to kill Israeli civilians” a form of punishment, to you?
By all accounts the attacks are over, what’s left are reprisals
I heard Israel declared war. It would be odd to deliver electricity to your enemy. Other campaigns target power plants. Short of expecting Israel to bomb their own plants, I would expect them to simply cut power if they can. Not saying they should, just pointing out it’s a common thing in war.
oh, for how many hours have the attacks been over? How many of the hostages were returned safely?
Israel has said it has fought off a majority of the militants—not that it as fought them all off.
there is no reason to think the attacks are over. There’s no reason to think they won’t come back with more rockets in an hour or two, let alone tomorrow.
there certainly wasn’t any reason to think attacks were over back when Israel made the call to cut power.
no water, that’s not a reprisal? medical care compromised by no power, if you’re into reprisals I think you should say it, but until now you’ve been entirely dishonest about it
so are you still standing by your claim that the attacks are over? should I continue to cite attacks as they happen? or are you going to admit that the attacks are ongoing?
Medical care is compromised by the lack of power. The reason Israel cut off power was not to compromise medical care. The reason Israel cut off power was a military strategy to impede production and firing of rockets. I already pointed that out, but you’ve been entirely dishonest about it. You’ll ignore the point again in your next comment, won’t you?
You linked to a live thread, not to a source specific to water. I managed to find one bullet point on that page about a siege that covers water. I don’t think siege warfare is generally viewed as a form of reprisal. From what I understand, starvation is generally illegal under most treaties, but requires a “high degree of deprivation.”. From what I understand, Gaza is near water, and has access to food and water both internally, via Egypt, via its sea border, etc., etc. So… meh. We’ll see if it actually plays out as a starvation tactic, versus a tactic to shut down supply to enemy combatants and rocket manufacturing.
Maybe Israel should have consider that before declaring the people of Palestine, as a whole second class citizens and slaves and erected a part-time between the two. Fuck israel and I hope they die
The people of Palestine are not second-class citizens of Israel, they are first-class citizens of Palestine. There is only one level of citizenship in Israel, and all citizens are afforded the full rights of any citizen. Every concession Israel offered the Palestinians was either rejected or used as an opportunity to ramp up terrorism. Look up the Olmert deal. Look up the withdrawal from Gaza. Look up the god damn Peel commission. We’ve constantly been vying for peace, and we’ve constantly been made to regret it.
There is no slavery in Israel or Palestine. There is no “a part-time” either. If you’re gonna make up antisemitic lies, the least you could do is check your damn speech-to-text.
Fuck you, I hope you don’t die, I hope you learn the vile nature of your lies and hate and the ashes they leave on your mouth cause you to grow the fuck up.
every concession Israel offered was a joke. Which was also affirmed by the US, the EU, and the UN. Why did you conveniently forgot how this trio, (together with an at the time still sort of sane Russia) proposed The Roadmap For Peace, which required Israel to stop building new settlements in Palestinian areas - but Israel said no. because fuck the Palestinians.
the Olmert deal was opposed by the israelis themselves. and the Palestinians said no, because the Olmert deal was a unilateral action by Israel. the Palestinians wanted to follow the plan that the EU, US, and UN proposed.
the Peel commission? the one from 1937 you mean? you’re joking right? you had to reach almost a century into the past to find an example that fit your narrative? never mind that everyone involved in that time is long dead.
you are spreading bullshit propaganda. Israel is an apartheid state and has been indiscriminantly killing Palestinians year after year.
Unprovoked
state-run electricity company
I wonder what the energy prices are like in Israel…
That’s not even worth talking about, you should hear about Natanyahu’s ties to their phone and internet services. It is/was overt corruption to say the least.
