    Petrol and diesel will be phased out eventually anyway, this just punishes lower class people who cannot trade in their car (because of leases or a general lack of money).

    The high-income part of the population already drives electric, making this much less of a a “Fuck cars” moment and more of a “Fuck the poor” moment.

    Instead of banning petrol and diesel, how about incencitivizing electric? (Stick bad, carrot good)

      There’s no punishment here, no lower class person of sound mind would consider driving in this miniscule part of central Stockholm. Lower class people take public transportation or bike in this city.

      I cross this area quite frequently and the most common types of vehicles I encounter are taxis and other types of commercial vehicles. The second is probably newer Volvo SUVs. Cheaper vehicles essentially do not enter this area, because there’s no reason for them to do so.

      Plugin electric vehicles, so plugin hybrids and full evs are at over 50% market share in Sweden. It is not like most Swedes can not afford them.

          The poorest usually don’t have a car in the first place. These wastes of space cost a lot of money.

            I’m talking about the poorest of car-owners obviously, as well as people who lease for 3-years periods. Buying/leasing electric is more expensive than a similar vehicle with a petrol engine, so there is no way this will not affect lower-income people the most.

            Bring the cost of electric vehicles down and give people a grace-period longer than your normal leasing period of 3 years and petrol bans begin to make sense.

            Not sure what you mean with “Wastes of space cost a lot of money”, but I suspect that you think this will mean fewer cars in the city? It will mean fewer petrol cars of course, but they will be replaced by electric cars eventually anyway and the space waste will remain unchanged.

            Again, this is not the “Fuck cars” moment most people in the thread seem to think.

              You assume that people need a car, that is not true, at least for Stockholm(and most of european cities). Many people, even rich ones, dont have a car or dont use the car in the city. The use public transportation or rent a car for how long they need with an app.

              Electric cars absolutely make the city more livable. The reduction in noise alone is huge.

    I wish Amsterdam would do this sooner than the 2030 date they’ve set for it. The air quality here is not great and my understanding is it has a lot to do with diesel.

      equal for particulate matter.

      Better in terms of carbon, harder to replace. Tires are an issue, but thats not a reason to keep on using ICE engines

      Which is why it’s not only important to regulate ICEs, but also make driving cars harder, especially in urban environments. We don’t just want people on to feet and bikes, but out of their cars. Bullying car brains is always good.
