When I was 16 I bought that MacBook and I put a bunch of random stickers on it. I took them off today and they left this residue… how can I get it off without damaging the finish?

Well I got the actual adhesive off with rubbing alcohol but you can still see where the stickers “stained” it if that makes sense… rubbing alcohol isn’t getting that off so I didn’t know if I just keep applying more or if that’s just damage

It’s probably stuck that way. The sticker covered surface either hasn’t “aged” like the uncovered part or the adhesive caused some reaction that changed the finish. If it’s flush and you can’t feel a residue remaining, then you’re probably stuck with it.

oh my bad, sorry. I think it would’ve been helpful to know that though. i think the other guy is right, the metal has “aged” or gotten a sort of patina on it and it just hasn’t done that where the stickers were so i think it might be stuck like that sorry pal

Rule Nb 1: NEVER EVER use stickers on a computer

Any adhesive remover should at least partially do the trick but even if the residue is gone it will most likely leave discolorations in the shape of the stickers.

    Nail polish remover/acetone.

Actually if you use the acetone while you’re peeling the stickers it’ll deactivate the adhesive leaving behind no residue and once the acetone dries off the stickers they’ll be sticky again and you can restick them somewhere else. Just use a syringe and go slow, get a corner or edge of the stick up with your nail or something then use the needle to apply acetone while slowly peeling the sticker.

This video show cases the technique

Mayonnaise- put it on and let it sit for 30 mins, then wipe with a clean cloth. It works wonders on sticker residue, although it might leave a greasy finish, that will come off with a bit of alcohol

I’ve removed adhesive from probably 1000 computers. The easiest and fastest way is use 91% isopropyl alcohol and a PLASTIC scraper with replaceable PLASTIC blades .

Just use a cotton ball, old sock, shirt whatever and soak it with the alcohol. Apply alcohol liberally to the adhesive. Wait a minute or so and use the plastic scraper to scrape the coagulated adhesive off. Wipe scraper with paper towel and do again.

    Edit: more details

We don’t use goo gone because it is oil based and can damage components. Alcohol is much safer to use on computers.

Put a dollip of vegetable oil or wd-40 on a rag and scrub gently- the residue will come off. A little bit of soapy water on another rag will take off the oil after that. Dry thoroughly.

This works great for most adhesive residues- stickers, duct tape, etc on most surfaces.
