So, with the PS Plus discussion, I already letting my sub expire at end of year, thinking about that I have to setup back-up sync process on my PS5->USB->PC. To my surprise, that option is no longer available on PS5 games(only PS4 title, not upgraded version, still have that option.)

The price hike is there “because they can”, Sony even blatantly shows on the console they can let you save individual save to USB for PS4 games BUT not PS5 games. As a long time sub this double whammy also lead me to the decision that I will no longer buy any cross platform release on PS5.

  • PS5 will be left to play only the Sony exclusives from developer that I still care about. I will take the risk for not having save backups.
  • I will never pay for any online tax on any platform for multiplayer and cloud saves. (already dropped live during XBox 360 and never paid for Nintendo Online.)
  • I will keep my PS5 not updated after my current sub expires and wait for hack/jailbreaks so I can back up my save files.

Honestly it saddens me cause from now on every time my favorite developers release a game I have to remind myself about all the above. I am the type of fanatic that sometimes buys multiple copies of games on different platforms just to give devs I love more money. So with this change of event, I probably need to get a Xbox just to buy some future indie games in the $20~30 range instead of buying on PS4/PC.

Good job Sony, you cornered me really well, thanks.

It’s unbelievably obnoxious. Even Apple still lets you backup to a computer. Sony has no excuse to not allow usb save backups, it’s downright embarrassing. At least you can still transfer them directly to a new system, but you’re SOL if you’re current one bricks. They should be ashamed.

Yeah, their long game worked really well so I will have to take the hit if anything happen to my PS5 game’s saves. It never really cross my mind when I bought PS5 and sold my PS4 Pro. I basically checked if all my PS4 game can be played on PS5, and did not check the save file back up feature cause who in the fucking right mind remove a feature that consumer can use to their(Sony) benefit? That feature literally reduced traffic to their cost sinker(not a lot but with amount of subs it’s still quite a bit of storage to up keep, oh, and that’s why they limit the cloud save further on PS5 as well. )

I have never really pay PS Plus for multiplayer in first place.(only for cloud save, free games, and extra sale discount.) My only multiplayer game that I played that requires PS Plus was Monster Hunter World/Iceborne. All other multiplayer game I played on PC. (there is a brief time where I also play Rocket League on PSN right after it lunched, I switched to Steam pretty quickly cause I wanted to give dev more money and my PC is much more powerful than PS4.) Oh, Driveclub, I play enough multiplayer to earn the achievements and unlock cars before I stay as offline as I can, I do not like online racing at all.

And good luck selling me the next console without a good game bundle, they just pushed me away and factor in all the extra costs/burden to pay and play on their platform. Developers I still care about, Naughty Dogs, Sucker Punch(Ghost of Tsushima), Guerrilla Games(Horizon series), Santa Monica(GoW), Housemarque(Returnal, Dead Nation, etc), Insomniac Games(Ratchet & Clank, I don’t really care about Spiderman that much. ) With their recent cross platform release, I will probably limit my purchase decision as well.

Damn this is really sad. I had been planning on backing up my wife’s save game data since she passed recently.

You can backup game saves to USB on PS5 for PS5 titles, but with no option to control which saves are backed up. Go to Settings > System. Select System Software > Back Up and Restore > Back Up Your PS5.

There you can choose to back up saves only, but it’s also mandatory to save the system settings taking up 1GB of storage and you can’t choose which saves are to be backed up. You have to copy all of them.

Sorry to hear that, my condolences. I’ve also trying to record my gaming session with my son just so in case some unforseen happened, he can still have all those happy memories at his hand.

(Oh, yeah, fuck Google as well, I am gonna dump my videos somewhere safe and high quality. Google photo’s compression/free space is getting worse.)

Yeah, PS3 was the golden age of Sony consoles to me, since lot of the tech that is standard now didn’t have the paywalls they do now. Like being able to back up saves and most importantly paying for online multiplayer.

Then starting with PS4 multiplayer became pay walled and people defended it due to PS+ saying it’s a good value, but I didn’t want any of that and just wanted multiplayer. And now they’ve moved towards gatewalling more things like even local saves to PS+ if you want to back up.

Yes, it really is sad trend. I don’t mind paying for service/product with good value, how they do with PS plus and PS5 save will make me think quite a bit when they release next console. If not for their first party “single player” games, I doubt PS is going to be as popular. My PS5 usage is already much lower than PS3/4 era, I might not get next gen console unless it has good package that come with it. (oh yeah, save file back up also a consideration, since you can’t really do memory card like old times. )

Happened for me last gen where I ended up only picking up exclusives for my PS4, since I refused to pay for multiplayer. I haven’t liked how companies have been bundling services that not everyone wants to be able to charge more.

Yeah infuriating what’s going on. I opened the iOS app just to find the feedback page to let them know I’ve cancelled my Plus subscription because of their greed.

      it is very bad implementation:

      1. it takes way more storage space for backing up
      2. if you alternate between 2 games restore will wreck both’s progression.
      3. it’s intentionally frustration to force you buy ps plus like time saver/exp boost mtx for grindy games.

So no, F to Sony, I am not paying. Yeah, it pretty much means I will not buy day 1 launch until the game is much stable after a couple patch in the future even for the exclusives. I have a video on a bug for GoW:Ragnarok still not getting fixed so far.(you have to reload most recent check point to fix it. I don’t know if some people will accidentally trip that bug and can’t get it fixed until they restart the game.

You won’t be able to keep your ps5 not updated fwiw, not unless you plan to not play another game newer than today on it.

New games will require a patched system

The whole thing is annoying and I might unsub, but I really don’t care to go to these lengths tbh, but you have fun
