Great fun for cops and TV news, but no stolen car is worth the danger of a police chase.

“The trooper backed off after the vehicle turned east on Fletcher Avenue and increased its speed to 70 miles per hour.”

Sounds like what everyone wants cops to do? Is the issue the State Patrol re-initiated the chase in the first place?

      For me, yes.

The driver immediately accelerated, the patrol said, and the trooper began a pursuit.

Chase someone, and they’re going to drive faster and stupider. It’s swell that the cop finally backed off (or said so), but someone cops have been chasing might not immediately slow down and start driving less stupidly.
