Almost 80 percent of Americans, and 92 percent of Republicans, think crime has gone up. It actually fell in 2023. An expert blames a familiar culprit for the mistaken impression.
I’m normally not one to raise conspiracy theories, but this probably isn’t one of them.
Historically, this is true with regards to human civilization. This isn’t the first time authoritarians use tactics like keeping the population afraid of some boogyman so they can push police state agendas.
Heck, other countries are doing the same thing right this minute.
It’s not unreasonable to assume that in a country as diverse and often confused and corrupt like we have in a lot of areas, would be susceptible to the same things.
Assuming we’re immune to that level of influence is going on the wrong direction. We’re not even immune to fringe extremist groups trying to overthrow our government. Even if they did it poorly, the attempt was made.
Ten years ago, nobody thought anything like that could ever happen here.
