  • Yeah, my boss expects that. He’s been at the same company for almost 20 years, since the department was created.

He also gave me a 3% raise this year. It’s nice to get cost of living, but why would I try to invest in a workplace where I know I’ll be able to make more and more elsewhere every year.

  • You can do several things, because prices are rising for several reasons. The most important are to vote, be frugal, and engage politically.

Rents are rising due to over investment, bad zoning policies, and price fixing. Ultimately, if the government doesn’t address these, the inevitable crash will. Voting can help, and not buying into the bubble definitely will.

Consumer prices are rising generally due to a bad economy with growing inequality. Again, vote, but also take care of yourself. For our middle class, the simple act of defiance helps maintain the circulation of wealth. If you can’t buy a home, rent from an individual instead of a property company. That sort of thing helps.

Ultimately, government and community action are needed. You can do both, and fortunately most of this helps you as an individual as well.

It looks like we’re headed towards guillotines and car bombs eventually, but that is not necessary or inevitable yet. There is still plenty of time for civic responsibility, communal action, and political conscience to make things better and get us back on track.

I live in Texas. I really, really don’t recommend it.

    • While the cost of living is better than NY, it is rising fast enough that won’t be true much longer, and wages aren’t rising much. I’m looking at moving to Chicago, wages are higher and cost of living is lower there. I’m getting priced out.

    • Our state government is unironically bad enough to effect your life on a regular-ish basis.

    • We made abortion illegal before Roe was overturned. We were the only state that did this.

    • The people will be more conservative than even upstate NY, and our state government is goddamn nuts. You will see the governor in the news saying that contraceptives, interracial marriage, and/or butt stuff should be illegal on a regular basis.

    • Despite popular discourse, we pay significantly more in tax than other states like California. People say taxes are lower because we don’t have income tax, but it’s just paid in other ways.

    • The traffic is really bad, and if you live in some parts of some cities, you will have to take a toll road to work every day. I know people who spend hundreds just on tolls.

    • State services are absolute garbage.
