Had something similar with my 4S. It needed a. Es battery and had to restore it through iTunes. Now is working pretty well. Using it docked as iPod.

I use my old iPhone 4S as iPod, I have it docked and I listen to music on my sound bar in my living room. I can use the Apple TV control for skip songs or adjust volume. Also I have an old iPod touch 4G which has a lot of games like Resident Evil 4 and Dead Space
