Got a message from my manager regarding a minor complaint made against me. Apparently I use big words in emails and some people find it intimidating.

We had a good chuckle about it. I was hoping he’d tell me who it was so I could send that person a link to a dictionary/thesaurus page.

Offer to meet the complainant in the thunderdome; or tell your manager that scary is a better word than intimidating.

I like this idea. In reality I’ll just use bigger and more obscure words (definitely throwing cromulent in there soon).

Give them something to really complain about.

Consider writing like an aggrieved Victorian aristocrat, or a protagonist in a Jane Austen novel.

          My dearest Human resources department,
I am writing forthwith, to complain about the insinuation that I am to be considered intimidating with my extensive use of longer vocabulary. To wit, I should also like to raise a complaint of mine, such as is within my allowance, that there is an intimidating lack of long words used in workplace communications.

          Good day,
          Mean Elevator

Good to see breakfast is on in the thread already

Quick update on where I’ve disappeared to lately: I have been living in a bubble since starting my new job almost 5 weeks back.

The days are INTENSE but rewarding. Found my passion in what I’m doing. The days fly by from how busy I am.

2 weeks in my manager went on annual leave so I’ve been running HR/WHS on my own. Talk about trial by fire.

But I’ve proven to myself and the company that I can hold my own.

In hindsight, I really wish I’d just posted this yesterday:

All of my best responses are well after I’ve already sent them.

Fabulous to get up and see a new daily thread. This manual setup for everything instead of midnight magic will take some getting used to.

I think for now it’s fine with whoever is up around midnight. I was a big supporter of the midnight smile club :D, starting a new thread is a similar thing. No need to bust your chops over it at the moment.

But learning to create a bot to post a new thread automatically is just the first step in my cunning plan. I will then be able to move on to creating my own personal bot army. First we will take over the Aussie Zone, then all of Lemmy World will be mine!!! I will throw all the people off and have pristine communities filled entirely with perfect, rule-following robots. Oh, wait, did I say that bit out loud 🤐

It’s all good! I was just up at 12:30 and saw one hadn’t been posted yet so I did the honours. I think it’s fine with whoever is up before one is listed don’t the posting, but obviously finding a way to automate that process would probably be best in the long term

I’m so grateful the DT lives on. I don’t have a large social circle and it really helps seeing friendly faces/ usernames with lil chats & updates. 🖤

Once upon a time there was a pretty cool nightclub. It was quite a swanky place. It had its regulars, drop ins and lurkers. It was open to everyone 24 hours 7 days a week. But one day the owners decided that the management wasn’t that important so management organised a mutiny. They closed the main dance floor and kept the VIP area open but still that wasn’t enough. So they closed the place baracading themselves in. Some patrons were confused as to why they weren’t allowed access anymore. Where’s everybody gone? Where do I go now?

Then some bright spark said “I know a place. Follow me”. Now this new place wasn’t as flash as the last (I think it was an old factory in the back streets of the industrial area in Footscray) but it was free and it was safe. At first a few trickled in to have a look around. Then word got around and more and more turned up. The old lurkers turned up to cause a stir but generally everyone’s been happy to have a regular place to meet again.

P.s.There’s always that dodgy looking guy in the corner with a leather jacket on chewing his gum and selling shit.

Had to make a decision to fire someone today. Haven’t actioned it yet, but got approved by one of the big dogs.

Tried so hard to give them a chance with written warning and performance improvement plan, but they think everyone else is the problem, they’re carrying their department, and that everyone around them is too sensitive.

Hard decision to make in this climate but I’ve got a whole team to look after that don’t deserve being bullied.

Feel more confident than ever in this job when my tough calls are backed like this.

Hello DT, happy housewarming for the new residence. This platform is going to take me a bit of getting used to. But nice to see so many familiar names. Thankyou very much to @RustyRaven@aussie.zone and anyone else who did the work to make this happen. I appreciate your tech skills and initiative!

Edit: I have no idea how to tag people properly, hope that was it.

I looked at it Monday I think and was a bit put off by the lack of numbers. But Tuesday morning, it became apparent the writing on the Wall and figured I may as well help get started or build the numbers. Rome wasn’t built in a day and all that.

I can only speak for myself but I took the 12-14 blackout as a way to detox a little from my overuse of Reddit. Came back to some messages from a few (Thanks @TinyBreak@aussie.zone and @MeanElevator@aussie.zone ) saying this is where most have migrated to.

But yeah, I do wonder if we’ve missed some people given the DT has completely shut down.

My husband has come home with a lemon meringue pie slice just to cheer me up and because he’s been using my car. I don’t mind receiving payments in the form of dessert.

      Happy new cake day! 🎂

A lot of the community are here, so you have not really lost it. Just relocated to this rather rustic locale. 🔨🪚

I am upset about the loss of our previous sub and DT, I didn’t even get a chance to thank people and say goodbye. However, I’m hoping this will actually turn out better. The people who are really determined to keep the community together are here.

Good point! I guess there’s just a chance some might not have seen the link to try, and even though i saw it before midnight it didn’t let me comment at all. It was already cut off even before the blackout time. So I’m bummed at how poorly planned it was. First world problem I know but the DT has been a haven.

I feel the same way! A few of us found out too late, it went down at 4pm I believe, and I’m a bit peeved that a handful of people were able to take all that away from us. It was our sub dammit! But we will overcome and rebuild, and it’ll be better than before I reckon.

just as a PSA, if you’re thinking ‘a smoothie with a not quite ripe banana will still be ok’, you need to go to the nearest mirror and say to yourself ‘no, no it will not be ok’

It’s officially been a week since I decided to learn Dutch, and my ability to introduce myself now rivals that of a toddler. I will say I am having so much fun with it! Also, I’ve found focusing on direct translation has really helped me with recognising word order and the patterns that come with that. Although I sometimes still get “en” and “een” mixed up, especially when I’m practising writing.

From what I understand a native/fluent Dutch speaker would mostly be able to understand someone speaking Afrikaans, but a native/fluent Afrikaans speaker would probably not be able to understand someone speaking Dutch.

Like for me Good Morning is Goedemorgen, Afrikaans like you said is Goie More.

Have you learned “I don’t speak Dutch” yet?

It’s basically a cornerstone phrase for any language that learn.
