Having a less cruel mindset is what allows it to go on though. Our justice system is built by predators for predators so victims are already at a disadvantage, and the fact that anyone would want consideration for the rapist only encourages others. Most child rapists are not pathologically attracted to children. It happens because of power imbalances or other factors.
