Can’t someone ask him what his motives were?

You assume the FBI, secret service, and every other 3 letter agency who can get access to his cell aren’t doing exactly that?

Given his biography, I would expect a string of conspiracy laden answers and generally incoherent explanations, though.

But isn’t that the most honest answer. Some form of mania. The GOP want us to live in a world where only democrats can ignite extremist violent outbursts. All while courting extremists. If the democrats rhetoric makes people violent then surely the GOPs rhetoric will do the same?

I dunno. I’m trying to apply logic to an illogical argument. So much of the time we should just shut these people off and work are hardest to deplatform them rather then just fact checking. It’s a type of pollution, which is fine in small doses, but it’s destroying the public square. That and all the shameless advertisments.

Do we even know he wanted to hurt Trump in the first place? He made no attempt at attacking him, he was just hiding with a weapon. Which might have been in order to protect Trump from assassins as far as we know. Did anyone ask?

Seems like we all went to our default internet sleuthing because the gunman is always dead. Maybe, like, someone could check in on him. I’m pretty sure it’s legal and such. Might need like permission but the dude still has rights until his trails complete.

That’s really a terrible way to make that assessment. I’m registered as a Republican in my state so I can vote in their primary, but that doesn’t reflect who I actually support.

That’s moderately useful for statistics purposes, but that’s all. It does not mean every individual person who registers as Republican believes in Republican values and votes for Republicans. Nor is it a complete list, plenty of states don’t require registration for primaries so there are lots of people who don’t bother declaring either way.

I personally prefer the idea that democrats and republicans are elected party members and party officials and that voters are Americans, who can choose to support any of (or none of) these independent organizations. In the same way that I am not a Seattle Kraken.

(ETA: also, you can track a direct line of interest in treating politics like a team sport and what Hannity is trying to do, so literally as far away from that as you can get is what I’m talking about.)

The same way I define if someone is gay, christian, or whatever other personal label, I ask them. If that’s not an option, I’m not going to make a judgement based on random shit.

This guy was a complicated person who doesn’t seem to strongly identify with either party, obviously Hannity is full of shit, but that doesn’t mean we should lose sight of nuance in our reality.

Read my comments further down. Your party affiliation is whatever you decide it is. There are plenty of reasons to register, vote, or support candidates contrary to party affiliation. That doesn’t make you ‘not party X’ unless you decide you are no longer supporting party X. It seems pretty simple to me.

There isn’t a democratic candidate I wouldn’t vote for. Doesn’t mean I identify as one. Not refuting you but your interpretation is much more complex then assigning based on actual affiliation.

Living in a deep red state, it’s the only chance I have to cast a vote that matters. Not just the presidency, but most of our state and local politicians are decided in the Republican primary. Half the positions I’m talking about literally run unopposed in the general election. So I’m going to keep voting for the lesser evil and doing what I can where I live.

When you train your base to be militant whenever they don’t get their way, you can be assured that you will always be on the chopping block. Look up the French revolution. Isn’t this new guy that was arrested a Democrat?

Records show Routh, 58, lived in North Carolina for most of his life before moving to Hawaii in 2018. In 2020, he made a social media post backing Trump’s reelection, but in more recent years his posts have expressed support for Biden and Harris.

The first one wasn’t iirc so Hannity is full of it, but this attack has legs once they get the wording ‘right’. Assholes (Hannity + Assassin).

There is no ‘make up your mind’. There is only a building of evidence. Unless you’re willing to declare some objective standard for what everyone considers an ‘official Democrat’…

In the meantime, many people register into a party falsely to do things like manipulate primary votes and such. A common attack vector for the first would-be assassin as I recall. To say “he is or isn’t” is pretty much in the eye of the beholder and we’re discussing points undecideds will consider relevant.

My mind is currently leaning to ‘way too many people will think he is a Democrat for this to be good for Democrats’.

That they are a traitor to the nation and should be ashamed, but they are officially a Democrat because of their registration. That is why they get to vote in the primary, because registering makes it official no matter what the reason is.

I am not registered for any party, and the fact that I end up always voting for candidates of one party does NOT make me an official member of that party.

He voted for Trump. Not a ton of Democrats do that. Call me crazy but while I’d assume someone who ends up attempting assassination doesn’t like the person they attempt assassinating, that doesn’t mean they are automatically a member of the opposing political party. 1/3rd of Americans are independents.
