I know I’m not in trouble, but I do feel bad that I’m probably the reason blahaj.zone will defederate with hexbear. I just thought they had an insane take on what hexbear was and posted it in the_dunk_tank. I included a link because I am not a LIB

but also I am a LIB and so are all of you and I’m sorry for that as well.

  • lol, i saw that. they were describing this place as an alt right instance and believed our pronouns were all ironic.

definitely feeds into the trope that liberals are baffled by positions outside the window of their indoctrination and the first impulse of many is to try to cram into one of the two slots that exist in their worldview.

    “post-colonial theory”
    is-this
    “is this right wing propaganda?”

They took issue specifically with “Death to NATO” and when people explained that meant the dismantling of NATO, they changed it to “Death to People of NATO” which isn’t even a thing!

I’ve been arguing with a user on .world about how hexbear is not transphobic and the pronouns aren’t “blatant mockery of trans people”. When I told them they were wrong, they said hexbear is “typical online terrorists”, putting the pronouns then going around posting “racist, bigoted” stuff. I’m waiting for proof of such posts. 😋

I keep hearing the “racist bigoted” line and I just don’t get it. Hexbear is the most strict online community I’ve been in when it comes to that sort of thing. Our users are open and welcoming, our mods are lethal.

Yea, I’m not sure where it’s coming from because I haven’t seen it. I also linked to the Hexbear code of conduct and highlighted the first two rules.

Tbh, I was not sure about Hexbear when federation started, but I never got the impression that anyone was bigoted or racist. Like there’s literally all the pride hexbear icons, right?

I feel like these comments are either intentionally malicious or intentionally ignorant assumptions.

Sorry to off-topic interject here, but due to the flurry of whatever you posted in your comment, I figured it might be an ok place to ask.

I’ve been interacting with hexbear a decent amount since y’all federated, and the images don’t work on my app (for example whatever you posted above came through for me as a series of partial image slices stacked on top of each other, and in-line gifs/images make the comment they are in completely unreadable).

Do any of you use apps/pwas (I know hexbear was here before they really existed, so might be a long shot), and if so, which ones actually display hexbear content properly?

Sorry, I don’t use an app. I just use the Firefox app feature of making a website into a dedicated app.

Do other instances display images properly? I think the way our emotes are supposed to work like inline images do across lemmy, but I might be wrong.

They do, in that there’s an image link, but the content is properly shifted around it so it can be read.

Hexbear content also gives the image link (tho your comment above seems to have combined them all into one link), but the comment around it gets partially hidden and garbled. I’ve heard your gifs are really big, that may be why?

Either way, this app doesn’t have direct messaging and doesn’t handle a lot of stuff well, like multiple image posts, so looking for other options. Since hex seems to be the most problematic presently (no offense intended, ofc 😜) I figured I’d start with something that works for y’all, if I can find it.

some people here definitely use mobile apps but I’m not one of them… once the PR goes through to fix federated emoji CSS that our devs put together then the standard web UI should show them correctly on any instance, but until then they’re going to be big.

If your app is showing them not just big but also mangled like you describe you may want to put in a bug report with the developer though.

I have put in a report, but this app handles other things very poorly as well and doesn’t have direct messages at all, so I’m looking for a change anyway :)

I assume they were mangled because there were so many in a row (it looked like a lot of them anyway), which caused the app to create a single image link for them rather than trying to render them.

I think it’s the inverse of conservatives who believe they aren’t racist while doing, saying, and believing racist things. They were provided a liberal (in the classical ideological sense) education that told them racism is bad but didn’t delve too deeply into self criticism. So now conservatives and liberals know racism is bad, but not really how to understand or identify it. So you get conservatives who steadfastly believe they aren’t racist because they don’t think they’re bad, and liberals who label things they don’t like as racist because it’s one of the most bad things they can think of.

Blahaj was always going to defed us. From the beginning they were more committed to the red scare stuff than even /r/196 was.

I’m pretty frustrated that the admin of the instance thinks we’re brigading. An admin should know that we’re getting their posts in our feed because we’re federated. We are just a big instance and we overwhelm the level of activity they’re used to seeing when it comes into our feed.

I am wondering if lemmy sorts content in a way that’s causing this situation though. Maybe it considers a post more interesting if it gets more activity than a typical post on their instance. So as soon as it appears on hexbear, the score on the post goes way way up and it gets pinned on hexbear for a long time.

She sees any dunk tank post of content on their instances as inherently brigading, is my interpretation

But I queried the API, before the dunk tank post went up the comments on that post were already 1/3 hexbear users. Now its about half. So while it probably had an impact it wasn’t like nobody here was going to see the original post, regardless of it containing bad takes that got it featured in the dunk tank

Though honestly I’m fine with, and actually would suggest

      1. not posting at all in meta discussions on other servers, at least until lemmy implements the ability to have local-only comms, which I think we would also appreciate here, and

      2. not linking to dunk tank content on federated servers. If it comes up in people’s feed it’s fair game, and if people want to tear their arguments to shreds in the dunk tank, fair game, but we don’t need to encourage actual brigading by providing a direct link, as a show of mutual respect for instances we fed with.

      \

And yes, lemmy’s dogshit Active algorithm is a struggle session factory, it’s truly bad.

All this federation/defederation drama is nothing but bad faith. Our emotes are too big, bRiGadInG, wishing death to the people of NATO, blah blah blah. Let me ask a question. Why do all these instances that had already defed from lemmygrad chose, for a time, to federate with us despite us being far more active with giant emotes and so on?

It has nothing to do with giant emotes and everything to do with ideology. Lemmygrad’s explicit ideology is ML, meaning there’s little harm in an instance that doesn’t subscribe to ML defedding the instance. “We are X while they are Y, so we are defedding from them due to ideological differences.” But Hexbear’s party line is left unity, meaning there’s a place here for everyone who professes a form of leftism with the caveat that they aren’t patsocs or anarcho-Bidenists. They can’t openly defed from us due to ideological differences because as liberals, they fancy themselves as part of the left, meaning it would be strange if a so-called progressive instance would defed from a left unity instance due to ideological differences. This is open admittance that they are not actually part of the left. We know that libs are not and will never be part of the left, and they cannot cope with that.

So what happens? They federate with Hexbear for a time, fishing for a nonideological reason to defed from us. This is where the crying about giant emotes comes from. Do you think they would actually care about those giant emotes, a technical issue that would be eventually solved, if we had the same exact ideology as them? Do you think they would actually care about brigadingTM if we were just some quirky instance that mostly talks about fish and other sea animals?

This is the same exact energy as a supervisor who writes you up because you were 5 seconds late. If you’re cool with your supervisor, you could be half an hour late. If you’re not cool with your supervisor, you would be written up even if you were already in the office before your shift but your ass isn’t in your assigned seat at your exact shift.

Yeah honestly we just need to not link instances we’re fedded in the dunk tank. Just screenshot, or maybe just use the fedilink (the rainbow star thing), so that it’s at least extra steps for someone to go there, read the post, copy the link, search it back on hexbear, click on the post, and then comment/“brigade”. I don’t think that calling out liberalism of other instances is really a bad thing/even brigading, but we should keep the discussion here not in their comments.

Shit we could even start pinging people like we used to back on CTH, but we need to find some way to not blow up every lib post on another instance into a massive struggle session. Better if the discourse happens here on our turf not out there.

Yeah, I think not directly linking to other instances is probably the correct choice going forward. The irony is that I posted it because I wanted to talk about it here and not there, because it was clear there was no getting through to that person.

Also, I want to be slightly fair to myself and say they would have called it brigading regardless. That post was full of hexbears well before my post. Our posting powers are too strong, we need to leave the training weights on in other instances.
