It has inherited this property from FORTRAN. There are, however, cases where Matlab starts indexing with zero and thus, these require extra caution.

Matlab is for applied mathematics where elements usually are indexed using natural numbers. It has inherited this property from FORTRAN.
There are, however, cases where Matlab starts indexing with zero and thus, these require extra caution.
