All of these looked right side up from the get-go. I’ve tried to look at it a few different ways to trick my eyes into seeing them as upside down, but I can’t make it work.
If I look at the top center first they are always upside down.
What do you see here? Stare at the cross in the center. This is not the same of course, but apparently works with similar parts of the brain.

I never see any green >v< pretty sure I did last time I saw it tho, but now I just see the purple circles slowly fading away, maybe cuz Im on a different screen now

I don’t think that’s how it’s supposed to display, they disappear instantly in sequence for me
I see green though… I guess it’s because green is the opposite of magenta? So lack of magenta = green to my brain apparently
The chaser effect results from the phi phenomenon illusion, combined with an afterimage effect in which an opposite color, or complementary color – green – appears when each lilac spot disappears (if the discs were blue, one would see yellow), and Troxler’s fading of the lilac discs.
At the small scale of this comment the illusion is significantly harder to see

Yea, I can get the right side 3 to look upside down, but the lighting just isnt right at all on the others to make my brain flip them.
I got it by focusing on the left edge of the top rightmost plate
I can almost see it that way when looking at single plates like that one in isolation, but when viewed as a whole I just can’t see them all that way.
Viewing it as convex puts it at a weird, almost floating angle relative to the other plates, which my mind tells me cannot be the case if they’re all supposed to be laying flat on a table. The camera angle being what it is, I’d expect to be seeing more of the illuminated left half than the shaded right half if it was truly upside down and laying flat. Not to mention the shadow basically touching the embossed oval shape on the right, while the left has a bit of a gap between the oval and the start of the bevel of the plate edge, indicates that the light would be coming from the right rather than the left (because shadows can extend), unless the plate is supposed to be oddly asymmetrical or something.
I only see them as right side up. I can’t even make my brain see them at upside-down. I can’t even see which one is the correct one.
But these are all clearly right side up…

They are, but because of the lighting you can trick your brain into seeing them inverted.
It’s an illusion. It’s a bit like the spinning ballerina, which can change the rotation it spins with the power of the mind… Shadows can truck our brains. Try to look at this picture slightly from the right and imagine the light source comes from top left… Maybe that way you will be able to see it like they are upside down.
The self shadowing ruins the illusion. An upside down plate will not cast a shadow on its own center.
I can usually see those double perspective illusions. Not here, it’s just too obviously right side up to me.
The shadows and perspective make absolutely no sense if they’re upside down.
The plates are all right side up. The main light is located off the right side of the scene. It casts a highlight on the right outside edge, and on the left edge of all internal edges. If one of the plates were upside down the highlights would appear on the opposite internal edges, but all of the highlights are the same.
Also the right edge of some of the plates casts a shadow inside of the dish. The edge of an upside down dish does not cause a self-shadow in the middle. Only concave shapes will do this.
They all look right side up to me, I’m pretty sure the shadows make it so it can’t look upside down, I can’t get it even to appear that way at all. I’m curious OP, with the famous dress, did you see black and blue or white and gold?
White and gold, I can’t see blue and black at all in that photo
Interesting. I have never once seen the white/gold in the original photo, only blue/black.
I only ask because both that illusion and this one work only if people misinterpret the lighting. I’m curious to see if other people here have the same correlation
I swear I read somewhere that the dress color was more a function of whatever device you were viewing it on. Depending on how the display settings and capability of the screen along with any other factors like polarization, etc.
That could definitely play a part, but when it was going around I saw it on a bunch of android phones, iphones, and on my computer, and I could never see white and gold. Also, I could see the blue and black on the same device as a friend who saw white and gold
Nah I’ve seen it on so many devices, even loaded it in a photo editor once and messed with the contrast/brightness for a bit. It’s always yellow and gold to me.
Gold is shinny and white is opposite of black.
Blue and black are in the photo. Gold is shinny and white is the opposite of black.
Yeah I can kinda force it to look upside down if I try to like unfocus but they appeared face up from the get go for me except maybe the top middle one?
Edit: interestingly when I saw the smaller preview image upon sending this to my partner then I could see it upside down.
I feel like I’ve been bamboozled
I’ve come across this image several times over the last years, but it only worked the very first time I saw it.
Interesting, I just looked at it again since I posted, they’re upside down. I know of course where to look. It gets me every time

This sort of implies that our immediate understanding of sight is inaccurate until we analyze it more?

Moreso that a lot of our image processing and depth perception is highly based on shadows, and a 2d image that lacks true depth can trick it somewhat easily.
Well our eyes didn’t really evolve for flat LED displays
it implies we can’t magically omnisce knowledge about objects, we have to go by what we say and say “well it looks like a valley so presumably it is”
How do I change them back?
The shadows only work when right side up. I know this works for some shapes, but not these plates.

With some effort I’m now able to swap at will. The light part is the top, or bottom amd focusing on it allows me tp imagine the swap then excecute

Yeah they are, the shadows give it away.
Look at the bottom center one, they should flip to right side up, and stay that way until you look away for awhile.
