I saw this graph be posted around on reddit (the graphics definately look like they are from the zionist rag). I don’t know which attack piece it was pulled out of though.

I’ll be honest, I’m not sure what exactly is happening here, cause I didn’t follow the election at all. However, I doubt that primaries are all too representative of the broader state of public opinion in NYC.

According to a quick Google search on Wikipedia, the primary had about 1 million votes, while the population of the 5 boroughs of NYC is almost 9 million.

In theory, a sample size of 1 million is more than enough to make a good statistical comparison, however, personally who votes in democrat primary is a self-selecting category.

Despite this, I am seeing the rather typical accusations levied against mamdani about champagne socialism or whatever (by the same people who don’t mind killing the poor and third worlders, but I digress).

One commenter went as far as to proclaim that “there is no more proletariat in America. American labor has achieved the end of history. The cops no longer break their strikes. They all have good union jobs and desire cultural security instead of freebies. Ideology is the luxury of the wealthy”.

Of course, the important possible explanations are left out

  1. Mamdani is a new guy with no name recognition. His campaign might simply have not reached low income voters who don’t keep up with politics.
  2. A lag of 13 points still means that he has a significant base amongst the lowest income voters.
  3. Most households making between 50,000 and 100,000 in New York are, as far as I know, still working class and not bourgeois. “Working class” has an objective meaning. In fact, even a sole trader petite bourgeois is working class (since proletariat =/= working class, someone who does not own private property).

Completely irrelevant. People’s relation to the means of production is what matters not income. NYC has affluent socialists? Good, if they put their money where their mouth is they’ll get shit done. 100k ain’t even all that wealthy anymore especially in new york where the bourgeoisie are raking in millions and billions off of imperialist trade

Really, this just proves that people making under $50k in NYC don’t vote much in primaries. As average rent in NYC is $3,700 a month, yeah $50-$100k is in working class salary range for the City, that is not living large.

Another factor here is, I’m assuming Cuomo did better with older voters. Older people often have low annual income, but they’re sitting on wealth (home value, retirement funds, etc) that give them a level of comfort higher than what their income suggests. So that could be skewing this as well.

My two cents: in my home country of Spain, back around the 2016 elections when there was a ton of voting intent for a left-of-socdem party called Podemos, there were also graphs like this, showing that the people voting them the most were the ones with higher earnings. A lot of it was “corrected” for if you took into account educational level (higher educational achievement -> voting further left) and living in a city (higher prices & earnings and more “modern” and “progressive” views) vs. rural.

Either way: the term “champagne socialist” is a bit of a propaganda tool against socialists. Like, Marx and Engels were both born to well-off families, which enabled them to get the higher educational achievement and the material means to support themselves without toiling 15 a day at a factory/farm. The same can be said about Lenin, Fidel, and most revolutionaries if you look into the history of communism and anti-imperialism. Socialism isn’t a poverty cult.

So, Cuomo was +19 with the under $50,000 median income group, and this map shows us where those voters are located on a map of NYC. I think I have that right. The majority of the highlighted area in that first box is in the Bronx.

The Bronx, according to datacommons.org has a median household income of $49,000:

According to the polling from a few weeks ago Cuomo was ahead in Bronx County.

The Bronx’s population is 55% Hispanic and 25% black.

According to statisticalatlas.com, which gets its data from the US Census, the median Hispanic household income is $38,000 and the median Black household income is $42,000.

The Hispanic demographic primarily resides in The Bronx:

It just seems disingenuous to state that Cuomo was +19 in this income bracket when we also know race is deeply entangled with earning levels. Like, what that image tells me is they simply looked at the racial demographic exit poll data and likely made some assumptions based on the median income levels of that racial group.

If ideology is a luxury, then it’s no wonder most Americans can’t afford it. It’s real telling that only the elite get to have an ideology and everyone else just has one imposed upon them.

Ok, I get to spin the narrative this time.

Porky should be embarrassed that he failed to win the rich vote when lesser porks would rather vote for someone who has called themselves a socialist than him.

Turns out the “heckin’ wholesome smol business owner” has an interest in sticking it to their landlords as well. Hard to run a business when the landlord demands more and more because you and your neighbors made the place too nice.

So the poorest section of NYC was largely duped into voting for the sex pest instead of the guy whose policies will actually help them. Now they will be subject to an improvement in their material conditions against their will.

  • I want to see some sample demographic data of this <$50k in NYC cohort. or just even it’s proportional size.

like how many of those are part time “artisans” living pseudo-bohemiam in the building their parents’ real estate trust owns, playing income deferment games with their food stipend.
