The summary in cop speak is borderline illegible

Senior law enforcement officials said the LASD bomb squad responded to a garage in Santa Monica yesterday, where at least one grenade was found. It was transported to the training facility, where the deputies were working to render it safe, and the explosion occurred.

So these brain geniuses find a grenade, decide to render it “safe” and then blow themselves up in the process 🤔

    Looney Tunes behavior

I thought the way to render these things safe is to blow them up at a distance but i guess these guys were the experts, not me do-not-do-this

They ‘rendered safe’ like 40 lbs of homemmade fireworks and blew up an entire residential LA street a few years ago, so I’m glad they decided to take it to pig school before they did it this time

The news keeps gassing this guys up as elite, yet they killed themselves in a low stress exercise.

Just read the details. These dumb fucks exposed three bomb squad members to the explosive radius of a grenade. 50% lethality at 5m if I recall correctly. Absolute clown behavior.

Ordnance is supposed to be cleared by EOD. Bomb squads get like 12 weeks training. EOD training is like 18 months.

I just can’t for the life of me understand why they would do this

Like the grenade wasn’t blowing up therefore it was “safe” already what would possess them to fuck with it

Because cops are dumb as shit and they most likely did not receive training on how to deal with the unique hazards grenades posses.

If I had to guess what happened,I’d say they probably tried to dispose of it by pulling the pin and throwing it. The grenade probably then went off immediately because they either mis identified it as a time delay grenade or the grenade was decayed and the time delay fuze didn’t work properly. That or they tried to unscrew the fuze from the body and some friction ignited the delay chemical.

I’m very ignorant, why would anyone want a grenade to explode immediately? I thought they all had some delay.

For use with trip wires or as a booby traps. Most grenades are designed to use a variety of fuzes.

            https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/RGD-5

            This article has an example.

From my experience most incendiary grenades don’t have a time delay either. They’re meat to be put on an item for destruction, pin pulled, and then leave. We used to set them off remotely by placing a blasting cap under the spoon after pulling the pin and taping down the spoon.

Generally, a grenade that explodes immediately with no delay would be useful for trapping an area. I can’t think of any other uses off the top of my head. It could also have been an old or incorrectly installed fuse in the grenade.

            Not advice

Think of a doorway of an indoor area. Take the grenade, hold the lever, pull the safety pin, and slip it into a tin can. Wedge the can somewhere near the doorway out of sight. The can holds the lever in place which keeps the primer from igniting the fuse. Now tie some clear fishing line to the grenade itself and make a trip wire across the doorway low to the ground. Now, if the wire gets kicked, it pulls the grenade out of the can and it instantly explodes rather than a 3~5 second delay.

Their propaganda says their job is super dangerous but this is their worst disaster since before penicillin was invented. Which was 1928. So if the previous disaster’s year was 1899 that’s a minimum of 29 years without antibiotics and they still weren’t dying more than 3 at a time. And that’s when people could still die from touching poop.
