For example most fighting games and arcade beat 'em ups I go leverless with my keyboard. For 2D platformers I like to use a d-pad. Then for 3D games I usually go to my 360 knock off controller.

I recently started playing old tank control style games in the vein of Resident Evil with my keyboard and it works surprisingly well. Old Tomb Raider also plays well with the kb set up.

Anyone else?

I’ve got one of the 8bitdo SNES-likes (SN30 pro?) for any dpad heavy game, an 8bitdo ultimate 2 2.4ghz for basically every other controller game (the 4 extra buttons in Dinput mode are great for flying games), and mouse and keyboard for the rest.

At some point I’d love to get flight stick(s) for some space games but I can’t convince myself to spend the money on them when that genre is really more of a passing interest right now.

I also occasionally think about fight sticks but I really don’t play fighting games enough to want to buy in either.

For Pre-N64 era games (and games that don’t need a stick), I’ve got a pair of wired USB controllers that by the grace of god still work perfectly after 25+ years. They’re shaped like a modern Xbox controller, with a simple SNES-style button layout. They’re unbranded, and I bought them for $13.99 from a local used game store that doesn’t exist anymore. I wish I could tell you more about them, but there’s literally no branding or serial numbers or part numbers on it, and the guts are just generic stuff you could buy anywhere at the time. It’s probably trying to email my info to President Jiang.

Other than that, I’m generally using an Xbox controller.

Holding out for my personal Best Regular Controller™️. The Chinese stuff is pretty promising as someone else mentioned here, but there’s still none that have gyro, a good d-pad in the “dish” style of the Xbox Series controller, rumble, and hall effect sticks, as far as I can tell. Other than that I usually just use whatever default controller for the console is or whatever is relevant for a specific genre.

Alas, I’d use keyboard and mouse more often but my hands and wrists get hurt fairly easily from keyboard fatigue. It’s mostly in first person shooter high action games that make me hurt. I can play mouse focused games fine as long as it doesn’t require rapid clicking constantly. So turn based games are totally fine.

For everything else I just use ps5 controllers because it’s what I have.

my hands are fucked up from being on the computer so much, so I use a controller (these days a PS4 controller) whenever it’s an option, but I do use KB+M when controller isn’t viable

I use a dualsense edge for everything that isn’t fps/tps or some other mouse preferable genre

I used to resist controllers in favour of mouse+keyboard, because I used to play so many FPS’s and I felt like was never able to play them properly with a controller. But I spent too long dismissing Dark Souls because I’d only tried it with K&M, and as soon as I used a conventional PS2-style controller I immediately fell in love with the game.

Analog left stick for movement will always be superior to wasd outside of fps games with instant movement acceleration that make AD strafe spam absurdly powerful. The analog tilt just adds considerably more precision and control to movement.

Mouse will always be superior for first person. But a stick would still make for better left hand control. I would happily take a mouse + nunchuk setup if it didn’t mean dropping access to a dozen buttons on the left hand scattered around the wasd keys.

there’s shit like the razer orb weaver from better companies but idk what any of them are called. gives you a thumb thing on the left and enough buttons you don’t miss the rest of the keyboard

The positioning of the stick is awful, same on Logitech’s one. You need it in the front and center ergonomic position or you don’t get full range of motion and control with your thumb.

              Yeah it’s a pain.

The ideal left hand control is something like a Switch controller, but larger, more like the size of a VR controller with more buttons available to fingers on the back/side. Basically half a game controller but with more buttons.

Keep the mouse for right hand. With that said I am not against the Switch motion controls replacing the mouse either, it’s extremely good when implemented properly at higher fps rates. Splatoon motion controls are as good as a mouse.

I’ve got controllers with the xbox and Nintendo style layouts but for me it’s more that I still have a functioning Steam Controller and really want to make it work with something
