    How about a “convenience fee” for making an online payment. Why should I pay a fee to make the transaction more convenient for the company who no longer has to pay an employee to take the payment in person?

      Because they can get away with it. By the time the fee is shown, you’ve probably already entered your personal & payment information so most customers are left with the choice to scrap the order entirely, try to call the place and re-do it all manually/with cash, or just put up with it and pay the fee.

      Very few people walk away or try to avoid the fee at that point, so it’s profitable and they keep right on doing it.
