For this edition of Saturday Anime Night, first up is Yuyu Hakusho (1992), one of the all-time classics of shonen anime, featuring a teenage boy who is killed by a car to save a child and then given superpowers in recognition of his selflessness. He goes back to Earth and fights bad guys. Expect a lot of glowing and powering up to defeat smug villains and the like. Episodes 31 through 36 tonight.

After that is Hotel Transylvania (2012), a CGI feature from renowned auteur Genndy Tartakovsky, the guy behind Dexter’s Laboratory (1996), The Powerpuff Girls (1998), Samurai Jack (2001), and Primal (2019). This is his feature-film debut, following Dracula (Adam Sandler) and his comic entourage of monsters as his 118-year-old daughter Mavis (Selena Gomez) discovers a human boy who wanders into their hotel. Hilarity ensues as dad tries to rid himself of the young man by any means he can. Tartakovsky said he wanted the film to have the feel of 2D animation, but in 3D, citing Tex Avery as his foremost influence. I guess we will see if he succeeded. It’s popular on Letterboxd, at any rate.
