The community name has been changed, but the c/steamdeck part cannot be changed without creating a new community.
In the previous discussion on whether to include Steam Machine/Steam Frame/Steam OS, the majority of the responses wanted to include the new hardware, at least for the time being.
Part of this decision is that, right now, the fediverse isn’t really large enough to support multiple hardware-specific Steam OS communities. However, if the community grows or it becomes apparent that the communities need to be separated, we can do that at a later time.
As always, feedback is encouraged and welcome.
the newly announced steam machine
Ah! I see Gabe Newell has finally perfected the combustion engine! Brilliant work from a brilliant fellow
“Steam Stuff” might have been better. That why not limiting the subject to hardware. I have a feeling that SteamOS is going to become a big talking point soon. Would be a shame to separate the conversations.
Here’s an idea.
Just rename it to " Steam"
Half-life 3 released as a Steam OS exclusive would be another nail in the Windows coffin and steroids for gaming on Linux.
Having an exclusive game for Steam hardware would undermine the reason why users support Valve in the first place.
I suspect that if anything is going to become big enough to warrant its own community it would probably be steamOS rather than any of the hardware, after all in a few months the hardware will be out and there won’t be as much to talk about.
But the OS is going to be getting updates I would assume, so there’s always going to be new topics
Oh neat. I feel like it’s going to be a good choice as long as people remember to use flairs.
There’s not even close to enough content being posted that it’ll get too disorganized
as long as people remember to use flairs.
Lemmy doesn’t have flairs.
You can still put it in brackets which system you’re referring to
Yes, but as the sidebar says, it’s only a non-binding recommendation.
It’s almost as if the top comment suggested people don’t forget that or something.
Oh I could flair I guess.
I’m so hyped for the frame.
Linux VR headset this sound gorgeous
I get to wear a linux box on my face, that can steam directly from my big linux box, oh also it’ll do VR and games. Shut up and take my money.
Yeah, first time I got hyped for the release of something. I didn’t expect the steam deck and that an amazing device. I got both version. I hope the frame will be thing kind of surprize
Me too. I prefer to be without VR than picking up a meta headset. So it’s nice to finally be seeing a quality non meta option.
It may just be my first foray into VR. Stoked. :D
Same! I’m planning to get one as close to launch as I can. I’ve been waiting on VR and this 100% seems like what I’ve been looking for. Super excited.
Same! I don’t have enough room or money to justify an Index, and I didn’t want to get anything oculus/meta. Enter Steam Frame 😎
I had an original oculus dev kit and thought it was cool back then. Frame is gonna be an instant buy for me and I’m beyond excited.
I was so excited for Oculus right up until it was bought by Facebook. I didn’t have the funds right away and had been waiting, but I immediately wrote it off the day that news broke.
Same here. I won’t consider any of them and I was going to get an index, but it’s getting pretty old.
Based on previews it really looks like they solved wireless PC VR. I still have an ancient original HTC Vive that I use veeeeryyy rarely. I’ve been tempted to jump on the Big Screen Beyond 2, but I’m gonna wait to see how reviews for the Frame shake out
I have a vive and an index, and even just the difference between those two is monumental
The BSB2 is great for what it is, ultimate lightweight and screen quality.
me too, i have a meta 2 rn and its a pain in my ass every time i wanna play a steam game or install and app that isnt in the app store. i believe the frame will fix this
I guarantee it will.
Cool, makes sense to me.
I’m a little worried about the Frame since VR (and especially the whole x86 to ARM) might be too big a difference to this comm, but IMO it’s fine to cross that bridge when we get there.
Maybe the Frame gets it’s own comm and this stays for the more conventional (?) Hardware like the Deck, Machine and Controller since they’re so closely tied together?Proton was a big difference too. It seem to be really opening doors for more Linux stuff. You should dig into the config this thing can do much and the did the same for arm Linux. They reduced the work by conbining the part. I wonder if big company would pay a service to get steam-os with hardware customizations to ship with their handheld
… You apparently can rename a community.
Huh!
Only the display name.
Well you could say that all hands are on the Deck

could be worse man, all hands could be on the poop deck.
This escalated quickly.
Ah!
I did not know that was how it worked, but that does make sense.
It’s cooler that way.
I think a migration to a properly provisioned community is a better idea. It seems Voyager and other clients don’t display whatever you supposedly changed by default. (I know, the display name).
Changing the display name isn’t enough. And I don’t think “the community is too small” is a good excuse to mangle this one.
No, all it would do is fracture the existing community, with some leaving for the new and some staying here unaware. Until there is an official migration tool in Lemmy itself this is the only way to retain the community that was built
I still get numbness in my extremities when I think about Valve releasing 3 hardware products at once. But yeah splintering the communities for each hardware on such a smol platform makes no sense.
What’s that symbol between “releasing” and “hardware”?
The orgasm button
I think the renaming is the right move, in order to not confuse anyone. Congratz “on the upgrade”. And well done asking what the community thinks before doing this. I wasn’t a fan of this, if the name was kept. But this way, it makes perfect sense.
I would argue that having a display name that indicates something different than the true name could lead to confusion for people like me who always disable showing display names (for both users and communities). Though, I am not sure how common it is for people to use this setting like me.
With all that said, in the end, this is probably the best solution for the community. I can’t be too disappointed.
I keep seeing the same name (Voyager for iPad) is there anything I need to do, or am I just fine?
Looks like Voyager does not support it, and the developer is not eager to add the functionality. This is their most recent comment on the issue, commented an entire year ago:
My official stance on
display_nameis negative, specifically due to impersonation and UX concerns (you can see my full thoughts here: https://vger.social/comment/4447844)While I won’t support showing
display_nameby default, I would consider showing a futureflairby default.I would also support adding a setting to show
display_nameif it was off by default.I’m not an expert on the whole Fediverse thing. I use Voyager on iPad since it is a clone of Apollo that I used back with Reddit, and I use Boost on my phone since I too used Boost for Reddit. I’m a simple man :)
In Boost it shows as Seam hardware and in Voyager as Steam deck. It’s fine with me since I know what’s going on. May it be a deal for someone that doesn’t know? I don’t think so, but who knows.
Unfortunately it depends on the app and where you view it. The app I use (Thunder) shows Steam Hardware at the top of the community and in the community list, but shows “steamdeck” in small texts under posts still.
Maybe it needs some more time to propagate. As long as I don’t need to do anything on my side is ok :)
Only the display name can be changed. It will still be /c/steamdeck, but now shows up as “Steam Hardware”
Well that’s tragic
That’s a pretty atrong word to describe the situation.
Ok
Yes, the frame is the one most likely to not fit. If it’s an issue we’ll deal with it then.
Excited to see the real world performance of the steam cube
It may be enough to sell my almost unused ps5

It may be enough to sell my almost unused ps5
I was just thinking the same thing. I don’t think I’ve turned it on in a year.
Yeah I pray it has a decent experience for modern games and isnt just an indie game box.
The deck can play ghost of tsushima, while not a recent game, it is definetly the best looking game I have ever played. The steam machine can probably run modern AAA games (without any AC/DRM)
Yeah but thats on a 720p screen not on a 1080p+ TV. Steamdeck can’t even do darksouls 1 on a 1080p display without being sub 60fps.
Steam deck is limited in power and thermals much more than a standalone console. Plus newer hardware.
It’s a shame that the c/steamdeck part can’t be renamed, but it’s also normal to encounter limitations from time to time…
Maybe it’s it’s the first community in need of such a change and it’ll be implemented at one point…
I just checked and the name is what comes up when searching, not the c/ designation. So it probably won’t cause much of an issue.
Yeah but it’s a problem for a guy looking for perfection like me😅
Dam you can rename communities? Thats an awesome feature.
I think the comm name and display name not matching will make it a bit confusing for people to post to…
I suggest calling it “Steam Deck and Hardware discussion”
I think it’s fine. The Steam Deck is Steam Hardware so I don’t see what the confusion would be.
The community URL is still !steamdeck@sopuli.xyz (so https://sh.itjust.works/c/steamdeck@sopuli.xyz for you), which won’t be easy for people to remember if they are trying to mention the steam hardware community. At the moment community and user handles can’t be changed on Lemmy (though the display name can be set to anything).
