Coconut milk and Thai red curry paste turn up the heat

Are you for real NYT, Thai red curry paste IS NOT SPICY. What heat?

  • lol, i was like, “red curry (the dish) can be spicy, maybe the AI generated paragraph didn’t realize the paste isn’t spicy and that the recipe probably calls for like peppers or chilies or whatever.”

and then i look at the recipe: red curry paste + butter and brown sugar.

    like wtf is this candy?

Why can’t people just be normal about sweet potatoes? I roast them like any other potato: a little salt, pepper, olive oil. They’re great, they don’t need anything else.

Curry (and similar spice blends) matches sweet potatoes perfectly though. It’s best in the form of something like massaman curry, but the other day I cut a sweet potato into half disks, blanched it in a vinegar brine for 10 minutes, then fried it with some curry powder to add to a bowl of ramen and that turned out pretty good too.

      • The flavor profile matches close to what people in the US, at least in the South, are used to. We’re already used to cinnamon, nutmeg and sugar with sweet potatoes. It’s not much further to add cardamom, anise, ginger, or other “warm” spices. Plus sweat & spicy combo has really taken off in the US over the past two or three decades as a cultural import. The OP is just an attempt at a fusion dish.

This is yet another step in manufacturing consent for white genocide in South Africa, perhaps with the goal of spreading this epidemic of an ideology to other countries in the future. It is precisely this kind of disgraceful portrayal of white people as weak and childish which serves to embolden black and Indian nationalists. We must combat this dangerous nonsense!

When I used to cook steak I’d add so much freshly ground black pepper that it actually was spicy and it was so good. Never thought it was too spicy though.

Piperine does bind to the same receptor as capsaicin and afaik has the same or similar effect, so it should be possible to make something too spicy with black pepper alone. Though I’ve never managed that.

Depends. I’ve had some that had a fair bit of heat. That may be wrong, but they do exist. It’s cheaper to toss in hot peppers than the actual ingredients.

Did they just scoop to the bottom of the dish before taking a picture? This isn’t even a situation where you have to ask a zoomer for help – any millennial with an insta could have told them that’s not how it’s done.
