I hoped there would be at least a section on Wikipedia for Zero Unit. There isn’t. This is the only text mention on the National Directorate of Security page. I love how the text entirely ignores how the unit got its name and it jumps right to a denial of what the unit’s purpose was. They were “trained to follow all rules of war”? Sure. And Santa Claus is real too.
In August 2023, surviving NDS Zero unit operators in the U.S. denied that they were ordered to shoot at civilians as they were strictly instructed by CIA officers not to do so while trained to follow all rules of war. Ex-ZU officer Nasir Andar reported that some of his colleagues committed suicide due to the long bureaucratic process where their expedited immigration assistance has been very long.
I haven’t been following this stuff at all so I didn’t think Zero Unit would be mentioned on the shooters’ page. But it is.
In Afghanistan, the suspect worked for a Central Intelligence Agency-backed “Zero Unit” of the Afghan National Directorate of Security in the Kandahar province.
I love the “trained to follow the rules” thing. Like sure everyone is “trained to follow the rules” that doesn’t mean they do, or are monitored or held accountable when they don’t. Individual responsibility for war crimes is civility apparently

I was amused to see “follow all the rules of war” in connection with the CIA. I have to wonder if the CIA follows any “rules of war”.

Edit
I just thought of a rule they follow religiously: win at any cost.
