Loved it. Really gives a close up view of how capitalism abuses art and artists to make the line go up. So many cool things that just ended up being used like once and then never again. And that’s not to mention all the good that could have been done putting that money into literally anything else other than an animated transphobic Stitch or a muppet that flirts with you.
Hilarious how Walt allegedly didn’t want to be an animatronic but ended up being a mediocre side show at his theme park decades down the line anyway. That shit’s got to be the most boring thing to sit through. At least it has AC.
Yeah some of those applications were insane. It’s funny how the technology kinda peaks with Turtle Talk with Crush - it’s a genuinely effective show, tries to build awareness about the oceans a bit, and is fun “magic”. The room also has AC, so it’s superior to the Walt Fest.
I really like how he explains how the work of R&D to create this cool stuff gets devoured/diminished by “operations” and their desire to turn a profit. Talking Mickey costs 4 cast members, let’s just do the silent one that needs 2.
Park Ops being the boogeyman that eats cool stuff alive is a throughline through a lot of Defunctland Disney stuff. Fastpass was a similar case I think? Only thing I can think of that wasn’t eaten alive by Park ops was the yeti that was so big when it moved it began to destroy the foundation of the ride it was on. Otherwise it’s just some middle manager behind a desk trying to wring every dollar out of this stuff that they can. I feel for the artists, but the biggest entertainment mega corp not being able to effectively deliver entertainment is a nice talking point to radicalize some Disney adults at least.
The Fastpass thing is so interesting - originally a great innovation (increases ride thorouput/efficiency and guest experience), and then eventually just enshittified/paywalled to oblivion.
