It was a huge relief to me when I finally really got that there’s no such thing as a person. Or any way you wanna express “consistent character”. We’re all just the sum of everything that happened to us and then we got into our heads that there’s such a thing as a “true self” thanks to American sensibilities hammering hyperindividualism colored by belief in souls into us since we were kids.

Everybody is just a collection of mental situations in a trench coat. We just decided that the ones that don’t allow you to work 9-to-5 and suppress all your emotions are the wrong ones to have.

That hits real hard, especially when I met my (now) fiancés family that turned out to prove that functional families exist outside of TV?!

…I have been hit with the three mental illnesses, and I am seeking help, but the time and cost go 😔

“You” are you watching/inhabiting a brain, watching/inhabiting a body. There’s more to you than your mental afflictions/configurations, that’s just a (somewhat modifiable) filtering screen. 👍

We’re far more than two. Most sections of our brains can be disabled to completely change our abilities and personality. Cutting the corpus callosum is unique in how clearly it shows how the concept of an individual is constructed.
