Not a deep song but it didn’t deserve all the hate it got.
Wasn’t the main reason for the hate because she basically paid for the popularity? A bad song that was self published is one thing, but I thought that daddy threw lots of money around for a professional shoot, collab, production and distribution and that’s where most of the ire came in.
Yeah pretty much that. A bad song that was written with daddy’s money, recorded with daddy’s money, filmed with daddy’s money, distributed with daddy’s money, that’s the impression it left. And it was being blasted in our faces everywhere.
As a very mediocre (then-professional and not making much money) musician it left a very bitter taste in my mouth. Granted some of it was jealousy, because I was in one of the ten top groups in the world in my genre and still no one who didn’t play in our genre locally knew who we were. Shit, if just one of our songs could get that kind of airtime… Anyways. I’ve moved on to smaller and better things.
That was my understanding. Dad wants to make his kid’s dream of being a pop star come true, so he spends tons of money to make it happen, and she became a meme because all the money can’t make up for lack of talent. There was probably also some schadenfreude when held against all of the other artificially boosted Disney pop star kids who were still in the internet’s collective memory at the time.
I should also say that I have no opinions on Rebecca Black as a person, she could be a really lovely and genuine person for all I know. And apparently she is still out there making music, which is fine if it makes her happy.
But damn did I hate hearing that song. Still do. It’s just a bad song.
Gotta get down
Before I do, though, answer me this: which seat can I taaaaaaaake?
She bounced back like crazy and owned those bullies later on though. I haven’t heard her latest album, but “Let Her Burn” was impressive, you should check it out on your streaming service of choice. A few very good music videos on YouTube as well (she clearly understands the style of the 80s)
